I feel like we probably need a French person to properly adjudicate on this discussion. Unfortunately, and somewhat ironically, I also have beef with them.
i might be wrong but as far as i know,
the nearest french word to adjudicate is juger,
which, in fact, means to judge.
which is sort of what i was originally getting at.
people judging other people.

And so we come full circle.

Sorry for hijacking your well-intentioned thread with these etymological musings, calum. I'll let you crack on.

FYI, to your original point, I don't know I think people can sometimes just be not very nice.

the plural of reef is reefs.
kevin seriously dislikes this post

Don't the French call us Ros Bifs ?

The plural of roof is roofs.

The plural of hoof is hooves.

The plural of octopus is octopodes, so shouldn’t it be beefodes.
a baby hedgehog is called an hoglet.
the mother can have about 4 or 5 per year,
but very few, if any, of them survive.
the mother often deserts or eats them.
so there is actually no plural word for hoglet.

Hedgehoglet is by far and away the best name for a young animal.

Wibbli Wobbli being the Welsh for jellyfish is probably the best named animal.
