Question Time

Victor Adebowale the Chair of NHS Federation just put it so succinctly when he just said NO when asked if Britain is lazy and has a sick note culture.
Brilliant.
If that is the case, then how do you explain why number of people on disability benefit has nearly doubled in the last 20years ? When we are all living longer and healthier lives?? Something doesn't stack up does it?

Wouldn’t often stick up for a Tory but clearly he was just having a bit of a brain fart understanding the question and when the penny dropped clarified about the safety legislation for not being sent their if in harm - so he did recover I felt.
Pretty stupid brain fart, he should definitely know that the DRC and Rwanda are different places. There are no excuses imo.

I’d be amazed if he genuinely doesn’t - i think he just said it to by some time as he was catching up with the question
Didn't look like that to me tbh. Either way it is pretty stupid. That's the problem with dropping people into ministerial positions when they have no experience in that area. It's even worse for health care, teaching and defence, which are more important imho. No other industry sector does this.

Bit of a blanket statement that. If you become disabled, you become disabled. Not all disabilities are due to poor lifestyle choices.

The problem isn't so much the potentially rhetorical question he asked, it's this line: "There's an exclusion on people from Rwanda being sent to Rwanda."

That's the giveaway that he has absolutely no clue whatsoever about the country he and his party deem to be safe.

You sort of answered the question in your penultimate sentence, people living longer, therefore more people. Plus the question wasn't about disability benefits it was asking if he felt that Britain is lazy and has a sick note culture. Not everyone who has a sick note is on disability benefits.

Very true , but the living bit doesn't answer all the question does it, ie its not proportional.

No but it was the only thing I could see. I'm not one for statistics and such. I just don't see that the majority of people in Britain are lazy and have a sick note culture but maybe I move in the wrong circles? :-)
Sunak is cushioned and maybe spoke without thinking (not that I like defending ANY politician of any party) I don't know. But if he did he needs to apologise to the hard working people of this country who are fighting to keep their heads above water. :-) JMHO

Sit down and have a little think.
Because we live longer we are more likely to end up with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s.
Indeed rates for those are rocketing.
These qualify you for attendance allowance. Not means tested. For life.
Attendance Allowance is a disability benefit.

I'm no fan of Sunak , I think he's a dick, but something doesn't stack up.

Thats a good point, but are you saying that in the last 20years we have had nearly 3million more people with dementia who now qualify for disability benefit? Seems a lot to me?

To be fair, the rates for working-age people has also gone up significantly, and they're not likely to be getting dementia. The increase in working-age people on disability is largely driven (80%) by more people claiming for mental health and learning disability related reasons. They make up 44% of all claimants now, compared to 27% twenty years ago. That doesn't mean that people are more mentally ill now than they were back then (though it's a possibility), just that there's likely more awareness of it. It's worth mentioning that less than a third of people who report a long-term disability are actually in receipt of disability benefits. Certainly my mum spent most of her life eligible to claim them but refusing to do so because she didn't want the intrusion (and in reality, was probably too proud to do so).

One funny fact to go along with the 'everything they touch turns to shit' narrative the Tories have carved out for themselves is that they brought in PIP assessments with the aim of reducing disability benefits by 20%, and ended up increasing them from 9.4 billion to 14.7 billion. Great work. So all of that bullshit they forced disabled people to go through saved fuck all and increased costs by 50% in ten years.
