This England team improves immeasurably if you put actual midfielders in the midfield instead of shoehorning a full-back into DM and a false nine into a lopsided diamond. Same old England, forcing themselves to play a rickety formation because certain "golden boys" can't afford to be left out. It was like this during the 2000s - England would have been better with Scholes with Lampard or Gerrard, not with both of them occupying the same space. Foden is playing out on the left because we just have to play Bellingham, apparently. As a team we're struggling to move through the thirds because we just have to play Alexander-Arnold. We've taken Wharton and Eze and Gallagher and Palmer and for what? So they can sit on the bench for five games and never get a sniff because "Hey Jude" and "Trent" simply cannot be dropped? Give me strength.

Actually think Phil has been the best of the mid/forwards that half, at about 7/10 performance.

I don’t recall Trippier playing a single ball out from the back up the LHS (don’t think he’s been passed to, so not really a knock on him). He’s kept wide when England are in possession but no one has utilised him. Rice and TAA have both been very poor. Nothing being generated through midfield. Bellingham and Kane very slow to get back to defend when England are out of possession. Southgate needs to make some changes at HT. Will be interesting to see what he does.

He needs to change tactics and get the team up the pitch, for a start. It doesn't matter who's playing if they are all within 25 yards of their own goal. It's exactly the same as the Serbian game.
