Rice's strengths lie in interceptions and breaking up play. That's fine, you need someone to do that. The problem is in the balance of the midfield.
 
All the back line and Rice playing ultra conservative - even whe there’s 4 v 1.
Plus Rice had a bit of an off game - this will occasionally happen to everyone.
But both he and Stones could come fwd and make such a diff - so obviously this has been coached out of them for the England setup.

TAA is next to non-existent- a waste of a position, as he is a problem child- a defender who isn’t a midfielder and can’t defend.
Luxury player who works for the dips only because he has a team of attack dogs around him.

Nobody else did much else - except for Phil who grabbed the game for a while, linking the rest up and showing game intelligence to be where he needed to be - literally dragging the uninspired bunch around him about as far as anyone could.

Other than that, we had no midfield to speak of. Everyone either at the front or at the back.

Subs - I can’t necessarily knock them as we needed something fresh. Gallagher for TAA - wise enough (but f obvious).

I pity the wingers and Watkins as they never got a sniff once Phil went off.

Which brings us to Bellingham - sorry, was he playing?
I think he didn’t do too much wrong tbh - but then, he didn’t do too much ar all.

Maybe Gareth was keeping Phil and Harry safe for future games…

But in reality, Southgate completely at fault for our almost complete lack of fluidity before and after the subs (except for a Phil trying his best to fix the system).

Think it was clear that we got progressively worse once he went off…

He’s a defensive midfielder in an England shirt, if like you say he’s not good or intelligent enough to play there he shouldn’t be in the team.

Correct, but not for Arsenal there's always someone in there with him
he did well when Kalvin Phillips was in there to hold his hand for England
He hasn't had that luxury with TAA and it shows
He ain't good enough to dictate a games tempo or control it,
Hes athletic gets round the pitch well, but at the highest level you need more and hes getting found out
If Southgate had the bollocks to play Adam Wharton you would see the difference, but he wont
 
I’ve watched some dreadful games in my time but that was definitely up or shall we say down there with the worst, They were clueless which is unbelievable when you look at the quality of our players, you would think they’d be able to muster something up and play half as a team it’s not like they’ve never played with each other before is it!?

That’s what I would do but as to what Southgate will do, it’s completely impossible to predict.
