This is a fantastic deal.
Alvarez is an excellent striker but he’s also 2nd choice. There’s been a lot of talk about how he played the most minutes last season but most of them came because De Bruyne was injured for a long part of the season and then he slotted in when Haaland was out for a couple of months as well.
If were being honest, when he replaced De Bruyne, he also wasn’t the best playing in that attacking midfield role either and it was one of the reasons we struggled to look fluid in our attacking play in the first half of last season.
A big reason he didn’t play many minutes towards the end and especially in the big games was because De Bruyne and Haaland were back and other players were in better form as well. From Alvarez’s point of view, you have to imagine that how last season ended is how this one will begin and I think he’s correct to adjudge that he’ll be on the bench quite a bit.
We have players like Bernardo who can come inside and cover the attacking midfield role when needed and even McAtte who will hopefully get some minutes as well, with Bobb coming in more to cover on the wing if Bernardo is in the middle.
Some might say we’ll be missing cover for Haaland but we won the league twice without a striker and our performances are arguably even more pleasing on the eye when we have an extra attacking midfielder in there instead.
Considering the above, I think a fee of over £80m represents great business for us and should allow us to strengthen in other areas - like a backup for Rodri or a future replacement for De Bruyne.
