Its Guinness time any day of the week.
I`ve had a Car Insurance Quote from my existing Insurers Swinton to confirm my new Direct Debit for the forthcoming year.
I stupidly forgot last year to "shop around" but overnight I did and found that Santander were offering a good offer for me. Nothing had changed from last year and I`ve enjoyed 9 years No Claim Bonus and even includes my 40 year old daughter, who lives in Bulgaria but stays with us occasionally and uses my car.
So my new Insurance with them is a nice £465.40 for this nice FOC and his daughter and includes a small monthly fee for taking it out as a monthly Direct Debit.
I called to tell Swinton that I would NO longer be renewing with them for next year and the dear girl at the other end was lost for words when I asked could they match Santanders quote. ;)
The robbing bastards at Swinton wanted £978.40 for exactly the same insurance.
Talk about money grabbing gits so my fellow Blue Mooners who constantly stay with the same Insurance Company for years, spend an hour or so looking and shopping around when your new policy is ready for renewing.
I suspect most of you already do this.

We just had that with Swinton ,though I think it’s common with many insurers, we were insured for £310, the renewal was £660. Shopped around got £310, and plenty of quotes in the £300/£350 range ,when we rang Swinton to cancel auto renewal the best they could do was £610.
Makes no sense that the existing insurers can be so far out and make no attempt to keep customers, almost like they are relying on people auto renewing.

Th insurance industry runs on data.

If you have a certain brand of car, live in a certain post code and are a certain age, and all that matches with their data that says lots of those combinations had claims this year, the price will go up.

It feels stupid but it's probably logical to them.

When you shop around, you find some company that hasn't had a load of claims for your combination and therefore you get a better deal.

Can`t understand their stupidity in fleecing existing customers as you say, even more so when you have a very good 9 years NO CLAIMS.

They’re banking on people being lazy and auto renewing.

Mine was £290 last year, quoted £420 by the same company.

Shopped around, found £285, rang my existing company to cancel and they asked what I’d found and they matched the £285 quote with no questions asked.

Gonna try 50p next year.

Not necessarily true in all cases. I've been with my current insurers for donkeys years now (must be nearly 20 years). Their renewal quote was at least €250 cheaper than anyone else I tried. €390 fully comp, NCB protection, windscreen, breakdown cover etc etc. That's for a 2021 Hyundai Tucson, standard diesel (not electric). I had a crash in 2008, which resulted in the car being written off. I really couldn't complain with the way I was treated. And my premium didn't flicker come renewal time 6 months later (protected NCB, it pays to stump up the bit extra).

My new quote came in £10 cheaper than last year at £378 which i think is a little excessive for someone aged 61 , 20 years NCB and with zero points on my licence . I always check price comparison sites for the cheapest quote . Not managed to get anything cheaper this year unfortunately by the time i`ve added the extra cover i take out .

Standard practice I'm afraid mate. They all offer a good price in year one then rely on folk being too busy/lazy to shop around in year 2 and jack the price up.
Several times I've had this and when I've shopped around the same insurer has come back with a decent quote on a new customer basis. When I've asked they say they forgot to apply my loyalty bonus or some other bollocks to the renewal quote. Cunts.

Don't know if it's true, but I'm sure I read somewhere that NCB is limited to 10 years, anything longer than that doesn't affect your discount. I'm also 20 years NCB, And my discount is 65.9%

Mine went up 500% simply because I have a landrover. Was with AXA 9 years, now with LV, premium almost twice last years but nowhere near the £2.5k AXA wanted. as you said OP, a disgrace

Always found if you shop around on line before your renewal date, they find out and give you a cheaper quote, sometimes they say they can not match that, but still do if you threaten to walk away.
The only time that did not work for me , was Sheilas Wheels who must have wanted rid, as they put the price up to double.

LR's are high risk vehicles. Not only are they desirable for thieves, and often stole to order for parts (broken down and shipped overseas), but also, they are susceptible to being written off, even for a minor collision. Insurance companies are often not prepared to accept the risk on such high value vehicles, which is why premiums have gone through the roof.

I went through this in Jan this year. Everything had more than doubled in price (multicar + home) and when I called them up to complain they acted like it was entirely normal. Spent a day shopping around and got it back to the same rate as the prior year with a different insurer.

It should be far better regulated.

Oh and btw if your daughter only drives occasionally when back in Blighty might be better just to insure her on short term insurance or add her to your policy when she here.

Insurance is expensive because they just write cars off willy nilly.

I had a Merc GLA, minor collision. About 1.5k worth of damage. They estimated £9.5k and wrote it off. Mental

As others have said, no matter what insurance it is, you have to shop around and change every year now. My home insurance renewal quote, despite no changes or claims, went up by around 70% so i shopped around and got it a but cheaper than i previously paid. Fast forward a year and again the renewal quote rose by quite a bit, shopped around and went back to the previous insurer who quoted me less than i paid them before, prior to their ridiculous renewal quote.
