New CL Format Thoughts

City fans probably aren’t the best judges of the merits of it. If you’d asked the same question when we were struggling to get out the groups for a few years running, it probably would be a completely different thread.

The reality is that we’re that good at the moment that any form of qualification that allows for the odd slip up and isn’t a straight knockout is going to be a formality and all a bit of a drag.

Think as long as we win 2 of our remaining 3 away games, we’ll be fine. Easier said than done, but PSG don’t look amazing this season.

I think most fans whose team isn't in the CL would love to be seeing top European teams. Those, like City, who have seen all three iterations of European Cup, old CL and new CL would would take the old CL out of the three. Interest drops when the ticket prices appear.
 
The biggest problem I have with the Chamions League isn't whatever format it takes, it's the amount of 'gamesmanship' that goes on with the diving, timewasting and poor refereeing favouring the 'legacy' teams.
How many times in the last 25 years has the Champions League been won by a team who hasn't had bending the rules as a major part of their tactics or had a helping hand from the officials? Maybe 3 times from what I've seen by us, Pep's Barcelona and Bayern Munich under the guy before Pep.
It just makes the games shit to watch and unfortunately the Premier League's going the same way.

I still think there's a strong argument to treat the 8 groups games like the early rounds of the cup, mass rotation etc...

If you have to play the playoff round the trade off of 8 games v 2 games is surely worth it.

For the 1st and 2nd seed teams, its awful - more games to play, games against league 1 standard teams, much less jeopardy and excitement. Realistically it probably wont start to get interesting til December.

With this new format each team plays two more games before knockout stage. Those extra games will be against two teams with similar coefficients. So for us that means two games against good teams like us (1st seed teams). If you're a 4th seed team, you will play your two extra games against other 4th seed teams. In the previous format, 1st seed teams would not play against other 1st seed teams until knockout. This disadvantages us versus teams with lower seedings. In other words, you are penalised for being in pot 1. Why the hell us, RM, Bayern,etc voted for this format, I will never know!
 
I am loving it, because both points and a goal difference matter for the overall table position and subsequent draw. There is more chance the stronger teams will find themselves in an unfavorable position after one bad result (loss). And three games against random stronger teams, what is there not to like it.

That is why we should have slaughtered Slovan to get as large a goal difference as possible.

Just like everything else related to this competition it's a money grabbing waste of fucking space.

Yes I enjoy City games but we don't need extra gaes to line the pockets of the greedy bastards at the top.

I fucking hate the CL, UEFA, FIFA and everything that it all stands for.

Never want us to lose but wouldn't give a fuck if we played out juniors in this shit tournament.

Oh yeah and the knockout section will be seeded so as ever the best teams will be positioned to get to the final.... really is a fucking joke of a competition. They might as well have a four team unseeded tournament.
