Southampton (H) | PL | Post-Match Thread

You’re right, but if we stop letting our defenders dictate the game they have the ball more than anyone, give it to the players who can effect the game the midfielders/wingers and be slightly more direct in our play instead of the safe option side to side and back, possession is great when used correctly, fortunate favours the brave ..
If only Pep had thought of that.

Seems to me too many people have been fucking spoiled by the success we’ve had since the takeover.
Teams go through phases and cycles and it’s utterly ridiculous to expect excellence and non stop entertainment from them all the time.
Pissing and moaning about Rodri and KdB missing is pointless. Of course the midfield is not the same without them.
Despite their absence those out there are still getting the job done.
Just be fucking grateful for that and hope it continues.
Class is permanent and we ooze it.

We gave our wingers the ball the WHOLE game.

They cant just put the ball in all the time and risk a counter, but they look for spaces where they can.

And they did make alot of chances, we just had the ball so much it doesnt seem so.

Consider how Pep plays. He cant just send in cross after cross aimlessly, it

1) Makes us prone to counter after counter

2) Too predictable, we do the side to side to sometimes lull the defense, and THEN make an action

3) To make more incisive passes that arent aimless crosses, requires finding space.

If only Pep had thought of that.
We have regressed if that’s the right word in how we used to play it’s all methodical at times slow build up now compared to the attacking football that had teams frightened to death, yes teams set up differently now but we don’t play as quick or as direct..

I think some of you are forgetting that we are down to the bare bones nearly with our injury lists and players only just returning from injuries.
We also played midweek and we will be in exactly the same position next week with our difficult trip to Spurs on Wednesday and a not too easy game next weekend also.
Cut the Manager and players some slack will some of you.

No you're right we dont attack as quick, but that's by design, we often end up on a counter and have 3 on 3 or 3 on 4 and we slow it down and build at a steady pace. Bernardo does it all the time. It's clear we are playing to the tactics Pep wants. It's probably not as exciting but Pep must believe it's the best way to win games.

We often see our wingers double marked, there was times today where Savinho got the ball and had 3 players in front of him, bringing the ball out with defence means we have an extra attacker in a forward position and brings extra defensive players out to meet our defender with the ball, we just need our forwards to find the space or drag players out of position and leave the defenders in space (Gvardial as a good example)

Had a bit of time to consider the game now. At the match I was frustrated by our poor finishing and the number of folk going up and down the steps and generally milling about seemingly not that arsed with the game. But now,I think given our schedule and, the numbers of key injuries we have to be , if not happy, then content with no apparent new injuries, a clean sheet and 3 points. Up the fucking Blues !

Win is whats most important and we’re top with our 2 challengers playing each other Today.

We played well in the most part but were so clueless in the final third. It was total dirge. No dynamism at all, it’s hard with a set defence but no one has the balls to try something for fear of turning it over and so nothing happens.

But we’re winning so as long as that continues all good.

Their half spaces where exploited very well with the use of wing backs opening up space, if it weren't for the frustration I enjoyed their play and look forward to Ruben Amorim if we go that way.

Always these type of games are tricky, we did the job, the job of champions, 3 points and move on to the next game.

Top of the league coming into November, what more could we want?

Not the greatest watch but another day Haaland scores 5 by misconnecting with balls he made a clean contact with today.

3pts is 3pts…and a draw tonight will make it a great weekend.

I’ve only just noticed that both Ortega and Carson were listed as subs. Presumably the plan, in the event of an injury to the Viking, was to move Eddie to striker.
