Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

Pep just needs new players to go again.

The aging squad is reminiscent of season one. Pep must decide if he has the stomach to build again.

If not we will have a new manager.

it’s not really a big drama, it’s football. We had the best and dominated for years, those players have gotten older and some have departed. City need to recruit again which won’t be easy at all going by the last few windows and our reluctance to spend.

We should be proud of how the club has grown over the last 10 + seasons. They have raised expectations and those expectations will need to be meet. I don’t think it’s ungrateful nor harsh to expect the club to continue to act like a big club. Iv said before, how long can we continue to look back and rest on success? Until we become the rags. This view is not because of one defeat but rather a worry that we are resting on our laurels, doesn’t work in football.

Climbing the mountain is fucking difficult but staying on top is even harder.

So yea just spend some fucking money on quality top tier players. Give the boss a team he can dominate with until he leaves. Anything else is taking him for granted

Very much doubt he will stay for more than a year but the rebuild will be longer than that.

Yes but that's not a rebuild.
Many regard the summer of 2017 as a rebuild and yet, of the players we signed that summer, it was only really Ederson and Walker who came straight into the team. Bernardo and Danilo didn't really feature properly until the following season and Mendy was out for all of it. Laporte came in January. Sometimes a couple of players really can make all the difference.

Over the summer we went from

Caballero
Sagna, Stones, Otamendi, Kolarov
Fernandinho
Sterling, De Bruyne, Silva, Sané
Aguero

to

Ederson
Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph
Fernandinho
Sterling, De Bruyne, Silva, Sané
Aguero

No major difference except at GK and full-back. It was just a necessary refresh that felt like a rebuild. No reason why 2/3 signings couldn't make all the difference for us, especially if Rodri comes back at his best as an added bonus.

I'm not convinced that Pep extending by one year is necessarily a good thing, as we've got Walker Gundogan and Walker all with their best years behind them, plus 3-4 others who have either lost their hunger or aren't quite good enough

It will need a complete overhaul so I'd rather he commits for 3 years or leaves with our gratitude and allows somebody else to grasp the opportunity

That's not based around the Bournemouth defeat. It's more a sense that the longer we delay, the more we risk the chance of it going completely tits up.

We've 9 players who are 30, or 30+, which does include 3 goalkeepers tbf along with 3 players aged 29.

At some stage we are going to have to either shit or get off the pot with regards the 1st team squad, and a rebuild happens either under Pep or his successor.

Hopefully part of the rebuild includes players from the Academy that are good enough. CTID

The Walker Brothers don’t get enough shouts on here tbf. Even in the tunes thread.

I think AN issue is that Academy starlets have failed to breakthrough and only provide profits from which to purchase talent, albeit at a ratio of about 5 to 1.

It’d be nice to see the current crop getting a look in get some more experience, even if it is 5 mins here, 10 there. They need to understand the speed, strength and nous required at the top, as the biggest problem they gave adapting to is time on the ball. O’Reilly, especially, looks like he has the goods if he would just speed up his game. Big, relatively skillful, but slow to release the ball and a little too languid at present.

It feels like we should have at least 3 or 4 Academy products in the team after 10 years of cultivating and, frankly, poaching young talent from all over the world, but we really only have 2, and one of them has been slow rolled for the last 4 years.

Time for O’Reilly to stake a claim, allowing Gundo to get half a game here and there, and Wright to get a chance as an 8. Managed to get himself into a few decent positions against Spurs and I feel like he really could be the next Academy product to make it at City.

Anyway, I think two transfer windows and the likes of Foden, Lewis, O’Reilly, Wright, Simpson-Pusey…maturing in the squad over the next 8 months could be the fillip this current squad needs.

It remains to be seen whether Pep has the zest required to refresh and revive this aging squad.

All good things come to a end sooner or later, Pep and City know this and will have a plan moving forward now if this means Pep signing up for 2 more years great, if not the club already know who’s taking over and will back him in the market. City are no longer a Micky mouse outfit and I have complete faith in the owners unless they are planning on selling, which deserves a thread on its own.

If Walker is the problem, sell Walker, keep Pep!
If KDB is the problem, sell KDB, keep Pep!
If Rodri is the problem, sell Rodri, keep Pep!
If Foden is the problem, sell Foden, keep Pep!
If someone else is the problem, sell someone else, keep Pep!

Glad that Cancelo is gone! Palmer good fucking riddance.

Pep needs to stay.. and I'm not going to change my mind..

Needs to make a decision.

One year extension won’t wash due to the fact this side is reaching the end of its cycle.

He either stays and does a refresh/rebuild or he bounces and a new kid comes in.
This is my take, we need to rebuild and a one year deal is not enough for me.

And if Alonso comes onto the market this summer do we risk losing him ( If he is the one we want) for one more year of Pep?

I disagree.

People are overreacting. Because we lost our first game. In what feels like 20 years in the league.

Nothing has changes.

We still have Haaland Foden Doku Savinho, Gvardiol and other young players. We still need to find repalcements for senior players going past their peak. But still better than most at their peak.

One year more or less changes absolutely nothing. Nobody is doing a wholesale overhaul, Pep or another, one two or no years. It will happen naturally one way or another.

30 is not old in football terms. Feel like FM helped invent that notion somewhere down the line, not sure.

Agree, these players have played at a very high level many the last 4/6 years and the majority have won it all, at the moment it's all catching up with the squad ! They do really need a rest but they ain't getting it maybe a few int eh international break and after that we see where we are? Maybe Pep contract situation be sorted to!

Not denying that at all, nor that a few key players need replacing.

But not buying that two years vs one 'fixes' that.

We signed Haaland in what was Pep's last year and he extended after that. We will sign players when the right ones are available regardless of whether he has one year or two, or 6 months on his contract.

I would argue that a high quality, athletic central midfielder would fix basically all our problems (injury crisis notwithstanding).

I don't know exactly who (I liked the idea of Rice and Guimareas but neither happened) but if we can bring in someone of that age the team for next year could be:

Ederson

Lewis, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol

Rodri, new CM, Foden

Savio, Haaland, Doku

Say the new CM is 24 or 25, that's an average outfield age of 25.5 and we can start looking to phase out Bernardo, Stones and Kovacic as squad players, for the next generation.

The reasons we're struggling right now are i) no Rodri, best in the world ii) injury crisis and iii) severe lack of athleticism in midfield.

We've been pretty shite for the last month but the situation is far from irretrievable.
