New CL Format Thoughts

The more I look at it the more I realise that Villa (pot 4) got a far better draw than us (pot 1).
I said that on draw day. I also think Dips and Arse got better draws than we did. We are never ( or very, very rarely) out of any cup draw pot first so my suspicions were alerted straightaway. There are those who believed the entire draw was rigged.

Can’t agree with that. See my post above.

Celtic got the easiest draw. PSG the hardest. Our draw was relatively good.

I don’t believe any of the CL draws were rigged ever. By the way just about every fanbase thinks it is rigged against them.

Sometimes, being taken to court continually aside, the World isn’t against us.

That's fine but it's based on co-efficients? not current form.
It’s not UEFA coefficients if that’s what you mean.

It’s neither and both in a way. It’s based on elo ratings which optimise the likelihood of predicting a particular game outcome. To optimise that prediction form does play a part in the algorithm.

More importantly, for this discussion, it isn’t biased in favour or against anyone thinking the whole thing is rigged to prevent the progress of a particular team, in this case our team.

Remember how some were shitting on the format and how is not interesting just because we beat two pot 4 teams?

This format is way more competitive. You have Madrid, Bayern, Milan, Leipzig, Juventus, Atletico, PSG, Stuttgart, Atalanta, Bologna...pretty much out of the first 8. Even we are having way more problems than usual in group stages while we are having 2-3 great matches each day. I repeat: this is a fantastic format and way superior to the old one.

And before the people saying: if Madrid, Bayern had lost 2 games in the old format, they would have a hard time qualifying at all come; let me ask you: when was the last time that Madrid, Bayern actually struggled to qualify? Again thanks to this format.

I would agree and I was against the changes at first.

It's made the competition far harder and far more open.

I think that the problem is that UEFA said every game would have jeopardy. Yet after 4 games there are at least 5 teams who cannot qualify for the KO stages. I think that livarpool only need 1 more win to guarantee being in the KO phase.

For the best teams there is no jeopardy of any real meaning in any games. Having the top 24 qualifying makes the games feel like pre season friendlies in importance.

The world is definitely not against us. I know a Swindon fan, a Rangers fan, an EFC fan and our window cleaner (non-aligned) like us, but the PL, our dearly beloved FA and those money grabbing bastards in Nyon? It's just a fair chunk of the football world, the RDAHMeedya, and those teams who've had their nose put out of joint over the last ten years!

Think we'll need to win our two remaining home games and probably get at least 3 or 4 points in the away games to get into the top 8.

Last night feels like night doesn’t really matter.

We could even lose in Paris, draw against Juve and win both home games, finish 19th or somewhere and then just go from there. A couple of extra games might even do our players who won’t have played too much this season a bit of good.

Preferably we’d win all four and qualify in the top eight which we could still do.

Either way, what would be a crucial loss in any other competition, just feels like it’s got no real importance on our CL campaign.

Just last week, everyone was moaning that our injury crisis was because Pep chose to go strong against Tottenham. Just 1 game apparently creat3d a mini crisis in our team.

Now, we are talking about playing 2 more games in the busiest part of the season, and having a harder path to UCL final (because round of 16 is seeded now). 2 games where we would have to use our best 11.

Honestly, the arguments people have against it are so damn stupid. When was the last time any group stage loss was dangerous for us? This is the most jepardy we've had in a linglong time in UCL.

The extra games is my only issue because we are not really needing them, otherwise playing different teams rather than the same 3 twice I do prefer

they could have gone with group stages and kept to 32 teams but would have meant 8 groups of 4 and less games in this stage so was never happening because its all abput advertisers cash not the football
