The Labour Government

You’ve lost me mate. GDP is completely different to government expenditure, that’s the total value of the goods and services of a country, the second is just how governments spend their budget.

OK sorry understood those figures still look high tho.

Check these out.

I’ll believe when I read it. Really hope to be proven wrong because increase in defence spending was something I wanted to see in the main parties manifesto’s
Given the track record so far, there seems to be more chance of Labour doing something if it wasn’t in their manifesto.

Anyway, good chatting with you fellas. I've got some work to do tonight sadly so must go.

I've got another great topic to throw into the mix soon!

Do you know how many we have for each carrier? and what is there normal operational capacity. I believe both are currently way short.

We have had both carriers for several years now, how long does it take to order F35s? Does it really take 4 or 5 years?

Do the Chinese and Yanks build carriers and then put them to sea with 25% or 30% of the planes they are designed to carry.

Sounds to me as if those in charge couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery?
Each of HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales can operate 40 aircraft both I believe will operate 28 aircraft in peace time and both are currently at sea working up with an air group embarked. Magnificent pieces of engineering to be fair.

That was the year before, remember government spending was all over the place in the Covid years.

The graph I put was from the government website so I’d hope it was right!

35 F35s each carrier and we’ve only have 35 delivered so far I believe out of a total of 170 odd. Mostly operated by the RAF with around 15 allocated to the carriers.

I never understood why we didn’t develop a VTOL replacement for the harrier and brought from the yanks. Our planes (be sole UK or joint development with partners) have always been superior to US offerings and that’s not intended to offend the US equipment as it is excellent.

No thanks to the political interference in their construction. Certainly something to be proud of like all our armed forces really. They need more money.

I'm still paying tax in abundance, not sure Councils spend half their budget on care homes now either. Just why would kids be forced into poverty when we pay more tax than ever can you explain where this monies going ?

It actually says Bulwark has been undergoing a refit , and is currently uncrewed and in reserve. So yes unusable at present but clearly implying that it could be returned to service if needed.

"In late 2020 Bulwark was dry-docked for phase two of her optimised support period.[42] The ship was to remain in dry dock prior to undertaking a phase 3 "recertification package" ahead of her planned return to the fleet in 2023.[43] In mid-2023 it was reported that the ship would not be ready for active operations until sometime in 2024."

Looks an awful lot like not useable for 4 years, which is what I wrote.

Whether Cartlidge has been interpreted rightly, I don't know - this seems drawn from this single line answer in Parliament:
"I can confirm HMS BULWARK will be regenerated from extended readiness and maintained so that she can be ready to deliver defence outputs if required."

Due back in 2023, then sometime in 2024. Cartlidge's comment seems to be an avoidance of actually saying that it's done because that would look like it had been left to rot without plans to replace it.
