Completely valid question. My only guess is players out of position tend to just try and drift back to comfort. Like when England put Gerrard on the left and he couldn't stay there even if you stapled him to the ground.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. There's a malaise running through the club and it's not solely a result of injuries. Something is endemically wrong. Either way, we'll find out soon enough.
