Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

The lack of any pattern of play to our attack and defence is concerning. We have lost the one-touch build up from the back, and line breaking passes, as we used to do in prior seasons. This has been gradually degrading over the past two seasons. We now insist on the ponderous, multi touch approach that lets the opposition press us in the mid block and dispossess us at ease.

I imagine the lack of practice between games to keep the players fresh, and the fatigue (both mental and physical) from relentless games has played a part. But over reliance on those factors borders on making excuses and letting players and coaches off the hook.
We have zero style anymore, I really don't know what has happened

A truly awful performance.

The players only know how to play a possession game when we dominate.

Now that we can’t keep the ball and have no idea what to do with it, the same players are just trotting about with not a care in the world waiting for pep to sort it or for injuries to stop.

The whole thing is a right mess. Time for cool heads now and for the club to act ruthless in the market to steady the ship.

The players are gone which leaves us a problem trying to shift them.

Huge job on our hands here huge.

Let’s see if the hunger has gone out of the board aswell as the players.

Something drastic has to happen now for things to stabilise.

Pep may have to finally concede that his approach with this set of players is done for now.

Problem is how do you retrain them? We are seeing signs of them only being able to play one way so even if he changed who is to say it would be any better.

What a mess.

I think the thing about the possession based football we're playing was that it had overlapping runs, through balls and a general urgency around scoring (i'd say apart from the last 6 months of last season, in which we bludgeoned people to death with it). This time it's possession with no purpose and comes with the added bonus of defensive suicide 4 times again! I think that's probably what the original poster was getting at.

We're not playing the same football as 2017-2023 - its not even recognisable.

It reminds me of Pep's first season.

He played his way, no matter what. Played a high line with players coming to the end or not good enough anymore and we had some terrible results.

All the same arguments that are in this thread today were said back then.

But then he had a summer transfer windows and we went on to dominate.

I look forward to him doing the same again.

Pep saying after the game. He isn’t in the right moment to make tactical and creative changes. Wtf! Those are the words of someone who wants the sack

I think most supporters are Sheila, but he can't catch a break atm or stay fit.

Superb player saddled with injury issues .

Reminds me of Independence Day. Once you find out the weakness, attack that with all you have.

And we are weak at the moment.

But why does Pep not see it, keep the system with players that are not good enough to play the role, but when things are not right change the system and make us hard to beat at least

We scored goals for fun in the first season. We scored bundles. The defensive lapses were primarily by the goalkeeper. This isn't the same football.
