The LA Wildfires

How did the fires actually start? Is the weather currently hot enough to start fires, or were they domestic fires that have been caught by the wind? Half of the country was under some sort of arctic weather warning as well!

Also, fires in this area seem to happen every year, maybe not as bad as this, and you have horrific tornado damage in other areas. Do these areas ever get rebuilt fully, or do they still have properties lost to fire etc that remain untouched and likely to never be repaired?

I'm guessing many people don't have insurance for wild fire damage?
Many had their insurance cancelled after the last fires.

This is going to happen a few times a year now. People living on the outskirts, near the forests, will have to move further into the city or out to the desert.
Scientists predicted the extremities will become even more extreme and more common...many people denied it.
In this country, people will evolve to have webbed feet.

The local media reporting production is the best I've seen ever. Whoever managed to merge Google maps with loves pictures to show where the fires as a reference deserves a pay rise.

I'm glad and surprised the loss of life is very low so far. But the mental scars of the people involved will remain.
:(

Yeah, I guess somewhat ironic that many of the people suffering from this one probably have some of the biggest carbon footprints of anyone. Usually it's the other other way around.

That being said, it's a bit like slagging footballers who talk about mental and physical strains whilst they're getting paid millions. They're still human and suffer like the rest of us. Must be a harrowing experience.

Terrible, saw these people leaving some stables with four horses, in what was an inferno in all directions. The air was full of embers. They told the reporter that they had rescued their own horses. Reporter then asked if there were any other horses in the stables.

"Yeah, about 12"

"Oh no"

It’s been very impressive how effectively local media have been able to provide real time updates beyond where their own reporters happen to be. Cal Fire have always been very good at this, but seeing the local CBS affiliate do it is quite an eye opener.

I was watching an LAX aviation site yesterday. Biden was in his helicopter with 5 support aircraft circling the fires whilst in the background a DC9 was dropping fire supressant. Sad for all involved.

Fair play to Biden. Don't think much of him but that's pretty admirable

When the nationals are complimenting it and urging people there to stick to their coverage that's the biggest compliment they could get.

Made the dick on Faux News look a right **** at the time complaining he was a goodbye tour around the world.

I'm guessing Biden heard because a couple of minutes later it was announced he'd cancelled his trip to Rome to be actively involved in the rescue efforts.

Feel so very sorry for the citizens of LA, what a shite start to the year, I always thought the Santa Ana winds were in summer.
I hope it doesn't get worse.
I can't imagine what it's like losing your home and all your belongings.

I believe the scientists, the Earths atmosphere is changing and the weather is becoming a lot more unpredictable due to the immense amount of fossil fuels burnt everyday.
Trump and his policies will not help.

I believe in most environmental catastrophes, owners usually just set them free as they're more likely to find safety. I believe people did it in Florida for the floods, not sure if that's the right approach in a wildfire but seems better than just leaving them in a stable.

It is a tragedy for LA, but most of those affected probably have wealth and insurance. It is stressful, but what about those in Tibet who lost all they had, which wasn’t much, and also lost many of their family members, for example? Same goes for poorer countries that get tragedies like this frequently, I am sorry but I can’t weep for Hollywood stars unless they help those who cannot afford to rebuild their lives.

Has Morrissey blamed it on the Muslims yet ?
As with the Notre Dame fire.
I expect the blame game will begin soon. Every single issue seems to turn into a cat fight. The usual gobshites just have to make it about them.

A quick glance on social media and it's fair to say that whatever side you're a drum banger for there is enough fuckwittery to go around. End days doesn't even do it justice.

Vast majority in that region are not Hollywood stars.

The men and women fighting this fire onthe ground are heroes. We had a close shave with a wild fire about ten years ago, it is a truly terrifyig sight. Once they get hold they create their own micro climate sucking in surrounding air at ground level and pushing it up into the atmosphere, driving away cooler air.

I've still got some of the flakes that fell around our "stuga". They are as big as the palm of your hand and we were still 3-4 km from the flame front. The map below shows how it spread:
blue = day 1
yellow = day 2
orange = midday day 3
red = evening day 3
