City @ Vale Park

I remember us winning 2-0 at Port Vale in the late 90s. I think it was the Royle second promotion season 99-00 but it might have been the one before. I was in a corporate box.

I went earlier than that in a relegation season when we were shockingly bad and lost I think 2-0. That might be the one you mean. Kinkladze couldn’t be arsed. Remember fighting afterwards too.
I was at this one. Wasn’t it this game where we started singing we’re not really here for the first time or am I well off the mark?

I thought it was Danny Granville that scored, but i cant remember how it finished. 5 of us waiting at Piccadilly with a few cans as they loaded the train. Got told " no more room" and we ended up in a carriage where they put mail sacks, with a wire fence type of barrier. No seats. Still, wasn't too far and we could keep our beer.

Random memories from 2 or 3 games there. Seeing David Bernstein in his car, a Jag I think and he gave us a nod and thumbs up, SWP 5'5" v Anthony Gardner 6'5". 'One' Clive Allen (Have that one Reidy!!) and a very random one, singing 'Number 4 is Jesus' to one of the stewards at said FA Cup game !! :)

lost 2-1 it was 98, think that may have been day that Overmars scored winner for Arsenal at the swamp to shift momentum in PL title we watched in a pub near Vale Park, remember City fans being turfed out and some steward on a power trip , was at half time they had a match of amputees and that chant went "are you City in disguise"
This.
I must of been in the same pub

Yes that was the cup match before a Steve Cherry inspired Notts County knocked us out. Think it was 1991
I went our 3 FA cup games that season.
All away.
Burnley
Port Vale
Notts County..... Gary Lund i think the cnut was called.
The rags won the cup the year before after being drawn away in every round.
Some of us thought fate was going to let us emulate it.... oh how wrong we were

Had tickets in the Bycars End for the cup tie, Vales end in those days, a mate living in Stoke got us the tickets. Loads of City in there all piled up in left hand corner. A mob of Vale gathered near by shouted threats but did nothing. At half time the police decided to evacuate the City mob. As soon as the blues were brought out through a gate in the fence Vale boys charged into the space and made threatening noises through the fence. We stayed where we were and pissed ourselves at the Vale mobs antics. Only other thing I remember is Aidrian Heath getting dogs abuse because he was ex Stoke City. A bloody good day out.

I got a ball in the face at Vale Park. Think it was Horlock. I was sat on the front row and he was having a pre match kick about with Nicky Weaver. He sliced one right into my face. I was so drunk I didn't feel it.

Yeh, we were pretty crap, but we won 2-1. I took the missus with me for some ungodly reason and made the only accurate prediction of my entire City supporting life, as we won a corner and Clive Allen was subbed on before it could be taken.
"Clive Allen's coming on here and he's gonna score with his first touch. you watch", I blustered.
100 predictions and you remember the only correct one. I have a record of winning every punt on everything for 50 years.

A trip down memory lane.

Talking to my brother about away games when we were rubbish.

We brought up Port Vale v City.
I few things still stick in my head……

City had all behind the net and half down the side.

Gerrard Wiekens scored infront of us

Attacking the City end, every shot Vale had that went wide/over towards the City fans, we kept the ball. At one point before half time, they had to stop the game to go and get more balls from somewhere as they had none left. After 5mins of the game being stopped and giving the goalie a new ball for a goal kick, the City fans then threw all the balls back on the pitch so it had to be stopped again!!!!

I was young and it was the first time a saw City fans fighting with Vale fans after the game in the car park. Shit myself

I know it’s a long shot but was anybody else there?
The date and the score would be a bonus if anyone knows
One thing stuck in my head was a brick post match
Several stitches so remember it well

I was at this one. Wasn’t it this game where we started singing we’re not really here for the first time or am I well off the mark?
I can't remember that but sounds about right. For some reason the firsts concrete memory of "We're not really here" I have was Chesterfield away the following season and I remember it because I remember a group behind me were using "We're in Milan watching City in the european cup" instead of "Like the fans of the invisiable man".

I was in there End in 91 with my young nephew he was about 11, we just stepped on to the track round the pitch and walked into the City End, we got absolutely dogs loads of abuse, we had things thrown at us and were spat at, a very aggressive fan base.

Fucking hell that’s triggered a memory of the amputees that had been buried for years. There was a nasty atmosphere that day as it really was dawning on us that we could go down again.
Exactly. I was in the bit down the side; Royle was getting loads of abuse. We were absolute dogshit. Port Vale fans, including scarfers getting pummelled after the game - violent, nasty, horrible day. You could sense the dawning realisation- we really could go down. And we really did.
