Council tax question

No not at all. You lived with your parents and they paid council tax. Its the house that is taxed
But I’ve not been at all registered, when I say my parents it’s just my dad now so also if I’ve been using his address for everything else and he’s been paying council tax as living in his own I could maybe be getting him in bother for not declaring me

Councils are quite used to people 'popping up' in their areas as we have a very mobile population. People move from one council area to another all the time. All the council wants is for you to pay your council tax. They won't give a shit whether you have come from Strangeways, Shrewsbury or Somalia.

Registering for a vote is a separate issue. You ought to do, legally. But it's possible to be a legal resident but not entitled to vote. E.g a citizen of Brazil with a visa. The lists are managed by different officials, so it's not necessarily flagged up. All it means in practice is the council might not get as much government grant as it ought, as you will not show in the relevant statistics.

Why are you suddenly so worried ? You've had 5 years to worry but it's never bothered you once.

After splitting up with the ex wife didn’t really give a flying feck about electoral registers and council tax, now settled down and don’t want it to be an issue

Definitely

Basically I’ve not paid any or been registered for over 5 years
Split up with the missus , used my parents as a base but didn’t really live there and had things like bank , driving license registered to their address
Both my ex-marital home and parents addresses are Salford and I’ve now settled in Bolton
As I’ve been anonymous and not on any council tax register for over 5 years if I suddenly appear on the Bolton list as I want to will I be questioned over why I’ve not been registered anywhere for the last 5 years ?

The answer to your question is that they won’t query it. If you want to know why I know feel free to drop me a PM.

Just to clarify….If you are in a property when the Electoral Registration Officer sends the form then yes you need to include your details on the form or risk £1000 fine. . You don’t actively need to seek out the Electoral Register and volunteer to register to vote..

As plenty of others have said, you’ve nothing to worry about with your new council.

But there’s a chance your dad could have issues. I was in what seems like a near identical position to you a few years ago. Had moved out from the missus house and was bobbing about with various short term arrangements. So I started getting all my post directed to my dads. Bank, work stuff, pretty much anyone who requires an address.

Before too long, the council had written to my dad saying that as he was no longer living alone, they’ve stopped the 25% single person’s discount. We’re no how the council found out but they did.

When you say ‘before too long’ how had you been using the address before they got in touch ?

I’m not sure to be honest mate. It was a while ago and it was a slow, drip drip kinda thing, telling various people that was my address.

It wasn’t a major problem though. I just gave my dad the 25% and well before the start of the next financial year he told them I’d moved out and they had him back on the 25% discount when the next bill came out, without any real issues.

If your parents bill was for a couple, and not a single parent with a discount, they won’t care. They only care if you give and address if they have access to and they check it to see if any discounts were applied.
