A lot of people on here will remember Rob Gretton, as big a blue as ever there was. On what would have been his 72nd birthday, I've posted a piece reminiscing about our times together ... and a lot of those times involve City. There's a couple of City-related stories on there that might be interesting/amusing to fellow Blues. Here's the link: https://shorturl.at/8HFAf

Cheers!

Cheers Steve, great piece. I’ve read loads of funny stories about Rob. What do you think about how he was portrayed in 24 hr party people and Control?

Great read that mate, my company frames original vinyl and Joy Divisiion are always one of the most popular bands we do, so thanks for posting it.

Great piece about two working class Mancunians who made it good in a golden era for Manchester. I knew Rob through the Hacienda and The Gardeners Arms where he was before every home game, often with Mike Pickering, sometimes Paul Gallagher, and maybe you, Steve? What a City pub that was, warts and all. As a teenage New Order obsessive I already looked up to Rob, the fifth member, and I remember feeling sad that he died right before the Gillingham game and never saw the turnaround of the club. Maybe that was apt, somehow.

I knew Rob over the years through music often sitting with him in a pub at an away game. I was always keen to hear New Order gossip. I was walking into Springfield Park for the play off game when Dougal one of Rob's mates told me he had passed that morning. It was a complete shock. 46 was no age at all. Steve I really enjoyed your blog remembering Rob. Thanks

One of my managers at work is actually Rob's niece.

We've spoken about him from time due to my City connections and my love for the Manchester music scene and his family are immensely proud of what he achieved and how he helped put Manchester on the map in the 80's and 90's

She's always said uncle Rob(as she calls him) was one of the nicest, funniest, caring people you could ever wish to meet

Happy birthday Rob

Great piece , first met Rob 1977/78 at rafters when Slaughter and the dogs played me and my mate watching what records he was playing ,then got to know him through mutual friends in the gardener's pub always friendly and a good laugh.ps got the poster the night of the gig and funny enough just found the ticket in an old book last week.

Cracking read that.

I was born in Wythenshaw and lived in Baguely for the early part of my life. My mum went to Benchill School in the 50/60's. I'm a bit too young to remember the early music scene in Manchester. Ian Curtis had already passed before I discover Joy Division, but their records blew me away. I kind of grew up around the dance music scene of the late 80's early 90's and regularly went to the Hacienda. Saw Rob knocking around quite a bit, but I never realised at the time what an absolute legend of a man he was.

Bet he played Police and Thieves. Happy heavenly 72 Rob.

Hooky hung him out to dry with his fucking book.
I read that book and although he can spin a good yarn and tells a good story he does come across as very arrogant and it’s everyone’s else fault rather than mine.

He did do a job on a few people and even got close to the mark with a remark about Gillian which I though was out of line.
