David Lynch RIP

Genuinely devastated.

My favourite filmmaker by a mile. And a visionary artist. His entire life was in many ways a single continuous conceptual art piece.

I remember going to see mulholland drive in the cinema as a teenager. It changed my life in the same way hearing one of my favourite records changed my life. That film was a gateway to understand that there was more to ‘art’ than being taught how to draw in school.

Fucking hell.

Up there with the very best. A significant cultural figure and a real loss to the arts. RIP.

Straight story is one of the best films I've ever seen. My favourite of all the Lynch's.

It’s such a beautiful little film that is so often overlooked.

Lynch spoke about small town rural america in so much of his work and that film was a really poignant tribute to it.

I haven’t watched it in years but I have it on dvd somewhere. Might have to dig it out.

I thought I'd be sadder but... what a life! He was proud of smoking his entire life and made it 78 despite that, and all after changing the world of entertainment. Can't say fairer than that for your time on Earth. Lived exactly as he wanted and fair play to him - the world has genuinely lost something with his passing. Rest easy!

The only filmmaker in my lifetime about whom I would use the word “genius”, calmly and as a considered term. Nobody else even vaguely like him. He pushed back the boundaries of what a film might be, what a film might do to you.
I've seen hundreds of films (in the cinema, not just at home) in my lifetime. I'm a big Scorsese fan. A big Spielberg fan. But there was only one Lynch, and his vision comes once in a generation. We didn't just watch his films — his films watched us watching them.
As for Mulholland. There are films: good, bad, very bad, sometimes brilliant.

Then there is Mulholland.
