Akanji wasn't at fault there at all. It was just a really poor decision by Khusanov.

I think Akanji could have taken control of the situation and cleared the ball but you had two players who cannot communicate and have never played together.

Important thing is Kodir showed real cojones to get his shit together and play well after a difficult start.

Shouldn't have been thrown in there and then... the 20 year old, non English speaking lad who'd barely stepped off the plane and walked into a losing team who'd just suffered an embarrassing collapse midweek

No need for judgement or even predictions right now just glad the more senior players stood up helped him out and turned it round, because we've cowered and collapsed when faced with smaller challenges game after game over the past 2 months.

We didn't sign him for one game we signed him (hopefully) for 10 years. Less pressure on him now Stones might be back (and hopefully Ake and Dias won't be long). We can ease him in then rather than chucking him in at the deep end, which we did today

Would rather have him have a first game like this against Chelsea and become a world beater. Than have a Mangala and become shit after it. Personally I felt sorry for him but hopefully he can push onwards. CTID

It’s going to sounds harsh, but for me he looked really lightweight. If stones, Dias or Ake are fit you surely have to start them.

For me he needs to be eased in.

I’d also say does he really look any better than Pusey?

Well he's started from a tough tough position after that 5 minutes, he showed enough in the next 50 minutes to show that he firstly has composure, to put the next 50 in on a booking, I thought it was a great performance first and foremost, but to grow into the game and be confident with his passing and positioning particularly, hopefully he should be pleased with his debut, but li reckon despite the win he'll be disappointed and be eager to improve.

Akanji is a passive player really good on the ball but doesn't see danger! When the lad jumped for that header if you can read the danger you would cover if he missed the header
Whatever about Akanjis role, the power in that header was shocking. It seemed to come off his ear. A mistake due to language , not knowing the system or just a bad header but blaming it on Akanji is a little silly

I think the point I was trying to make is that Akanji’s gesture will have pit doubt in Khusanov’s mind as they can’t communicate any other way.

Looking at it again, Akanji tries to get there but Khusanov gets there first so Akanji stops, don't think you can blame that on Manu, it was just a poor decision to head it back when the ball was that low.

Maybe but the lad looked like Bambi in headlights.
A very big game to make your debut in, no knowledge of the language and only in the country a few days.
Its the equivalent of the lads being bunged up in " Midnight Express"

Yeah, he was hung out to dry really, but kept going and did get better.

Hope the crowd ovation he received when he was going off has helped him feel that he’s been accepted and one of us now.
I hope he noticed this. There were a few times the fans went over and above to show their appreciation today. Khusanov, Marmoush obviously, but I thought Pep particularly as well as Erl and Phil were given a good ovation at the end.

As an aside and probably discussed elsewhere, it was great to see so many stay long past the end to support the lads.

Crowd was good today. The lad will be looked after by us.

Felt for him today. With hindsight, it was too big a call to put him straight in there. Just glad we won so that there is less focus on his mistake. Am sure he’ll become a top player for us, but he was hung out to dry a bit there.
