Not sure if this is the right thread but a few rows in front of me last night was a lad having his photo taken proudly holding up his half n half city/brugge scarf, whilst around his neck was his half n half Brazil/England scarf all done whilst wearing his Flamenco shirt. I'm about all done with CL malarky.

In terms of the champions league, other than a couple of the bigger games (spurs, Madrid and psg) I don’t think we’ve ever had that great an atmosphere in this competition.

There’s a number of reasons for that. I’d say one being our fans for whatever reason have just never taken to the competition - I know loads of season ticket holders who don’t go to any of the games.

Obviously the fans that do attend need to be singing more, but I don’t think the club have helped either. The ticket prices are often too much and the ground feels a bit like Disneyland in this competition.

I wonder what the atmosphere would have been like if we were still at Maine road
As the wife drove us into town up the Parkway last Friday pre Lloyd Cole, on the way past William Hulme’s I glanced somewhat forlornly to my right (not at the wife) thinking this is where we belong

The fans were nervy in the first half and good in the second half when we were losing.
I was just bored. In the CL most of the action happens in the second half of games so teams just conserve energy in the first half and it’s very dull a lot of the time. That’s why Pep saved Sav for the second half to kickstart the action. When I saw the starting line up I knew how the game was going to play out tbh.

A similar thing happens in two legged affairs, where the first leg is just making sure you’re still in the tie come the second leg.

It’s why the FA Cup works better and is more fun.

I do think CL crowds is definitely a different crowd but then again some of the grounds best atmosphere have been in Europe Madrid 2023, Spurs 2019 all was great

I'd argue that as it gets to the later rounds of the CL it becomes more of a PL crowd, certainly all the regulars around me all show up for the QF's onwards. Group stages though, there's literally only one bloke I recognise

Agreed, most season card holders near me attend from the quarter finals onwards

I actually think that most of the tourists want to join in with the singing. The ones around me last night did. But they aren’t going to join in with “Taking the piss and you know” or “if I die on kippax street” or “sometimes I fantasise” or even a 100mph version of “we never win at home”.

Maine Road was an absolute cauldron; songs echoing from the rafters; every game a cacophony of noise, energy and passion.
I just wish we’d had this forum back then. Record the deafening sounds we heard week in, week out.
We were fucking good at booing and doing the slow handclap, and we had some brilliant choruses of Swales Out and What the fuck is going On?

That's not how I recall the Swindon home match back in the day!

I think the lack of atmosphere due to ticket price is an excuse, aka pricing out the “real fans”
The most expensive tickets prices ever for a UCL game was vs Madrid, and the atmosphere in that game was incredible. I just don’t know what it is, I went to Newcastle vs PSG last season, it was a group stage game, but the fans were going mental, it was louder than any UCL game I’ve ever watched at the etihad (granted I haven’t been to any quarter or semi finals) I’ve been to Celtic park too for group stage UCL games, crazy. We are the FC Barca fanbase of England, we only turn up the noise against the very very best, even if it’s a must win game, if it’s not Madrid or Liverpool or Arsenal, it’s gonna be a below average atmosphere like yesterday. I didn’t go to the game so I don’t know if it was good or bad because you can’t tell for sure on tv but I’m just sick of hearing TNT commentary mention “it’s quite nervy here isn’t it?” in 90% Of our home games. We have an incredible team, incredible manager, owners and away fans are the best in the league. But yeah, definitely the quietest home stadium for in the top 8- by far. And it’s not like we don’t have anything to celebrate..It is what it is..

I was being a tad sarcastic. Think too many worry about this and that at the match, including how loud / quiet etc.
it’s the same at pretty much every ground. And always has been.

He probably wasn’t English, Belgian or Brazilian either, haha!

But wasn’t that the match where SHA la la la Summerbee was playing?
More than that he was scoring!

He wasn't Sha La La La La Summerbee back then as the song didn't come out until a year after the match.
