US Tariff War

A response could be to announce that unlike the American bully they will not harm their own citizens by putting on tariffs that would raise the cost of goods on their citizens.

Its better to let the bully harm his own citizens so he can feel big. To join him in his stupidity only makes the Mexican and Canadian counterparts doubly stupid, no?

This is where being seen to respond and actually responding in a meaningful way kicks in. The Big Bully has started a fight, you can't knock him out, but he can knock himself out. So offer a token resistance to keep your own people onside, wait until he knocks himself out and then declare him the winner.

How do tariffs work for global brands? Say for instance the UK put 25 percent on all US car manufacturers but ford make UK cars in the UK, do they still pay a tariff, or is purely on imports?

car makers have assembly plants that assemble parts to make a car - a lot of those parts for Japanese cars possibly come from places that will have a tariff imposed on them.

"We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!"

Dos anyone think that this could possibly work? A whole 1 state, and 40-odd million permanently angry people (and some polar bears) to deal with.
It's insanity, or it's something an insane person thinks is a joke.

Maybe Trump just wants the rebels to rejoin the Commonwealth.

Careful on the Trudeau Praise. It’s like giving someone credit for getting a fire extinguisher out after setting the house on fire.

Trudeau’s ‘supposedly green’ virtue signalling legacy has resulted in numerous commercially viable ‘Energy independence’ projects being cancelled, and as a result most of Canada’s energy exports go through the U.S. at a heavily discounted price. Canada already loses $Billions per year as a result of this policy (at the benefit of the US).

I’m not naive enough to suggest Canada would ever be ‘free’ of reliance on the U.S., but no country in the world has shot itself in the foot like Canada has from a resource development standpoint, all at Trudeau’s direction, and now they’ll feel the pinch even more than they needed to. A double whammy.

It's possible to tariff finished cars and not the parts though, to encourage assembly in your own country. But yeah, it's always going to ultimately increase the price.

Talking of cars I wonder if the Chinese ecar maker that is threatened with a 100 percent tariff set up a factory in USA would Mr Musk allow it?

It's hard to see how this will end. Predictably anyone who already hates Trump thinks it's terrible and people who like him think it will be great. Both groups are probably too 8nvested in themselves to talk sense. I suppose we'll just have to see how it plays out.

I was particularly amused that 95% of avocados in the US are imported from Mexico (according to reports). That suggests that there won't be any serious alternative producer than paying higher prices in the US.
Import mushy peas instead of guacamole.

The only thing more predictable is a “both sides”, “we’ll have to wait and see” post from you that adds no value to the discussion whatsoever. :)

California Haas avocados are all I use in my guacamole. I will now pay much more for them (TBF they are usually better so I already do). Why would any CA avocado farmer not jack up the price with 90+% of his competition now subjected to a 25% higher price?

I’d like to see the Fed go with an emergency 25 basis point increase in the Fed Funds rate. Try to head inflation off at the pass.

I’m enthralled.
I don’t have any experience in economics, so this is going to be fascinating. If Trump’s advisors are correct and smarter than the rest, it’ll be some victory for the Orange one.

If it is as catastrophic as some experts predict, well hold onto your seats America. This could get nasty.

I have an inkling that one way or another this will get nasty.

Any chance we can put massive tariffs on Avocados over here so all the pompus knob'eds implode? (northern quarter short pants crew I'm talking about you)

Cheers
