Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1986 - (page 212)

What is your favourite Beatles song from 64 Bill? Quite a few to choose from.
Too many contenders to choose one Saddleworth.
I love the following songs,

I'm A Loser
If I Fell
I'll follow the sun
I should have known better
And I love her
Every little thing
8 days a week
No reply
I want to hold your hand
Can't Buy Me Love
Hard Days Night
I'll Be Back

Ticket to Ride and All My Loving are awesome songs but I think 63.

I'm going for a two for one on this next track.

First, this soul song version in an of itself doesn't appear to be a chart topper, but wow was it influential. While this version charted in 1964, it missed the US top 40, peaking at number 58.

However, this song is ranked number 429 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, so it has stood the test of time unlike others that did better at the time in popularity.

Second, my first memories of hearing this song was from the (1980) Blues Brothers film from Saturday Night Live alums John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd, along with Stax Records backing band members guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, brought in by pianist and arranger Paul Shaffer.

This song had many covers, but nothing more memorable to me besides the SNL movie inspired version that made it popular again to teens of my generation. Now that SNL is celebrating 50 years this season, I figured we'd go back 45 years when this was renewed again from the SNL act that expanded into the film.

Fortunately Ticket to Ride is '65, so we'll be able to discuss the little bits of genius scattered throughout that song.

I have just had a fresh audiology test. My scores were so low it’s no wonder I can only hear songs with which I was familiar years ago. The brain fills in the missing bits. Bits? Most of it. Musically, I’m stuck in 1990.

I am now totally deaf in my right ear so everything is lofi mono these days. I can pretend I’m in the early sixties irrespective of what I listen to.

some in there that aren't as front of mind. I must go back and have a listen. We could do with a couple more Beatles on the play list to properly reflect their year. Could you nominate a couple from your list?

it seems strange not to have a Rolling Stone song on a 64 soundtrack given they released their debut album in 64.
On March 6th, 1964, The Rolling Stones released their first single in the United States. "Not Fade Away" was a Buddy Holly cover that charted to No 48 on the Billboard top 100.

Not really, though it was release in '63 it actually sold many more copies in '64 so was one of the best selling singles of the year we're on.
I was thinking about that but came to the conclusion that the way we are doing things - i.e. predominantly talking about a song in the year it was released as opposed to when it was on the charts for the longest or became very popular - is the correct approach.

The reason being that for the most part, it's good to talk about where the idea for a song/album came from and how/when it was recorded.

There is no right or wrong approach but for me, talking about a song/album as soon as it is available works best.

Ignoring your initial 10, how may have you nominated now? ;-)

We need to have a consistent approach and think we should stick to the one you describe. The only problem will be records released in the US in different timescales to the UK.

Not a problem at all - it's when the song/album was first released regardless of where that was.

Well if nobody else is, I might as well. I can’t let my year down :-)
I'm coming up short this year mainly because you listed many of those I'd have chosen on the initial playlist (well, the same artists at least) and other people have mopped up the rest!

I did get The Who track in though. Surprised some of The Who fans didn't beat me to it.

Your year is doing ok for nominations relative to the other years, there's a few more to add to the list that I've not done yet.

There's been some good conversation by people who've not actually nominated songs, hopefully they might want to consider adding something.
