If you go through our defenders(forgetting Nunes because he isn’t one) then it’s not even close. Akanji is the quickest by a distance
He might be the quickest over a distance, but he's the slowest when it comes to reacting to danger. I'd rather John Stones played there to be honest than Akanji. Will be a big ask for Kushanov, but i think i'd rather that than Akanji.

If this game is played on paper, we win this comfortably. Their back 4 is going to be as makeshift as you'll ever see tomorrow. If you were to make a city equivalent of it, it would probably look something like Nunes, kovacic, simpson-pusey. Lewis.

Who here would have any confidence we could keep it below 6 with that kind of defence? This game is here for the taking we just need to go for it. the fear of their front 3 is their best defence, actually attack them and they'll get pumped.

I have no faith pep will go into the game like that though, I expect him to play for control to limit the chances they get to break and as such we'll barely trouble their stuck together defence.

I think 35 year old dinho was faster than Akanji is, thats my worry. He seems so slow in reacting to danger which could leave him very exposed against someone like Vinicius.
I think a back 3 with wing backs might contain their front 3 better, plus also cause them issues going forward - obviously not going to happen though!

I know it sounds egregious.

But I hope Pep plays the most haram ball tactics tomorrow, á la Stoke City, Liverpool, Sam Allardyce, long ball over the top for Halaand, wingers taking on fullbacks and whipping as many crosses in as possible, they are missing their entire First choice backline, no need to be doing 100 passes around Madrids box, that's the easiest style to defend against. We can beat these by a couple of goals at the Etihad and imo that would be enough to go through.
I like the idea. It might work, but we'll need a lot more than a 2-0 lead to take to Madrid. For us to get through over two legs with our shaky defence will take a Hercules effort, a miracle fact, but hey, we all know they do happen.

That’s that then

Vázquez, Tchouameini, Asencio, Garcia played was their back 4 vs Atletico. It's not their first choice but I don't think you can call it make-shift.

we are stupid if we cannot get one of their players to get a yellow and be suspended for 2nd leg. especially from Bellingham, Tchouameni, Camavinga, Modric.

I'm with you. Akanji has become so lazy this season. This attitude certainly contributed to Khus' Chelsea cock-up.
I just think that the unknown quantity of Khus looks more attractive than what we know about Akanji and Nunes - that either Mbappe or Vinicius will give them a torrid time.
It's a cup, so polarised - we go through or we go out. If it's slightly worse (should Khus not cope well) then what does it matter?
If we churn out the same sort of defensive performance that we have been doing, it ain't gonna go well, we probably all agree upon that?

Their entire preferred starting back 4 is out, how is that not makeshift?

Vazquez is a 33 yr old winger turned defender in a pinch, tchouameni is a midfielder, asencio is an academy product pushed into the team through neccesity and garcia is a utility man they brought back to make up the numbers.

Turpin will make sure none of them get a yellow. Both Bellingham and Camavinga should have had yellow cards to be suspended for the 2nd leg the last time we faced them, but both escaped multiple yellow card offences

This is an advantage, but the problem is, that our defensive and midfield will also have big problems, but we have to stay positive.

I think people are underestimating their defense. Valverde will probably play RB instead of Vazquez (injured), who`s a far better player anyway and is very dangerous on counters/transitions, which is our greatest weakness at the moment. Asencio is very quick and aggressive and has improved loads this season, a very hard defender to face. Tchouameni is playing out of position and is prone to the odd brainfart, but he dealt pretty well with Alvarez and Griezmann on Saturday. Fran Garcia is almost as quick as a prime Walker, which makes him more or less impossible to beat for pace. I think you`d need a very direct dribbler like Savinho to beat him
