Backhanders = Jail and a lifetime exclusion from any future public sector employment.

Clean it up, make it transparent, and get on with it.

Every constituent should be able to see their MP’s salary and per diem, with a listing of their claimed expenses online any time of the day or night.

The list, and scope, of claimable expenses should be available either on the site or via a link, so anyone can check all expenses were legal and defensible. In addition, any “gifting” of expenses (such as a luncheon paid by a company) must be noted and detailed, as should all the meetings in their work calendar.

MP pay increases should be exactly the same as any increase in Old Age Pensions.

Yep. Pretty much. Don’t get me wrong, I know £94k is a lot of money to most people… but do you want the best and brightest doing the role? Well they are currently in the City earning double that with a fraction of the hassle, responsibility or scrutiny. And they get perks, stock options, a chance to accumulate wealth.

In London £90k is the salary of a middling project manager in financial services. It’s an expensive place to live and work and the salaries reflect that. I think frankly you’d have to be a bit unhinged to rather be an MP and have your career path be decided every 5 years. Which is probably why most MPs are either a bit nuts or landed gentry or both.

It’s easy to deride them all but clearly a lot of talented people go into politics and although some will be stealing a living many will be underpaid in relation to their abilities.

It generally should work that the higher you get the more talent you have.

Know the right people or organisations get into a constituency where the public vote for a party mostly rather than a person. Look at the country.

If that's talented people God help us if we got run of the mill in charge.

Dealing with the local loons during surgeries in your constituency. Lots of travel to and from London. Time away from family, as you say endless criticism on line and being the first and last point of contact for people to vent at, then when things are not going well in their life. A proper poisoned chalice.

Lots of shit jobs get paid a lot less while having to be thick skinned, being a police officer for instance. Cant do right for doing wrong in most cases.

MPs are paid about right, cabinet ministers get about another 70k on top of their MPs salary.

A typical Finance directors package working in London is around £200k so its in the right ballpark.

The big gig is when they stop being ministers and leverage their connections or do the public speaking circuit. Its as much a key to open other opportunities as it is to be a career politician.

Yes when they leave public service that is where the money is. Could be said for a lot of roles.

Well if we take Liz Truss as an example, reading her bio, she studied at Oxford University, politics, economics, philosophy, was president of the Lib Dem’s at the above University. Started working for Dutch Shell and qualified as a Chartered mgmt accountant before moving to Cable and Wireless and becoming the economic director.

I appreciate you might not consider her talented but the private world of industry did, and she qualified from one of the top two universities of England prior to moving into politics.

It’s unlikely, without being offered a reasonable wage, she would have moved into politics.

You are correct, as I understand it there are not a list of qualifications you require. Personally I think that is a good thing as it keeps politics more of a meritocracy. Then it is up to the public to decide who they vote for.

It is of course not a perfect system and like you say some MPs get put into safe seats to accelerate their career path. I suppose you hope that, in the majority of cases, this is because their talent has been identified.

Presumably recommended by the appropriate pay review body. If so, can't really be argued with providing they also accept pay review body recommendations for other public sector workers in full.
