Away fans / tourists in home sections

Look at Liverpool’s mode, half of their capacity before the latest extension was match day tickets plus away fans. They only have 26k season card holders. Not sure how many, if any, they released with the opening of the new stand. Think we generate the lowest match day income of us, Liverpool, Spurs, rags. Arsenal and possibly Chelsea. Club trying to play catch up but the problem they seem to have trouble identifying is that we don’t have the tourist numbers those other clubs have. The club has priced out so many local fans it’s untrue. And anyone under the age of say 18 who started getting interested at aged 5 will have known nothing but our success but they can’t afford to attend. We somehow need to attract this generation of fans at affordable prices on a regular basis. Maybe a huge section of the new stand could be for the under 25s, unreserved rail seats, affordable season cards etc.
There are very few scousers at Anfield these days. Most of the locals have been priced out and watch the matches in nearby pubs. In fact the non-attenders are the ones who cause the most trouble, attack coaches etc, outside the stadium. Liverpool away is a very bizarre experience these days. Not just on the pitch. It is also getting like that at the Swamp. I really hope we dont end up like them so the club should intervene to prevent it.

I wont be on any of the cup schemes next year, the new format of the CL has been an unenjoyable joke for me, completely lack of jeopardy and almost resentment at having to play so many groups games.

I thought Tuesday night was a joke for 'neutral fans', it's not the first time for a big game either.

The numbers of people fucking off the cup games is high too, I know a lot who have done it.

Makes me think, with the increasing capacity, I wonder whether the club have the cheek to make the cups mandatory, they'd have a riot on their hands if they did.
Mandatory cup attendance is next.

Absolutely agree with this. I left the CL scheme this season. Too many away fans in EL3 surrounding the few season ticket holders who were attending CL games. Ridiculous of the club to allow this to happen.
I was exactly the same. Sat with my sons surrounded by tourists and eventually decided enough was enough.

Had a bit of a Twitter-off with a scouser today, he’d jumped in on a discussion about Tuesday, and it ended up (somewhat inevitably) about empty seats/tourists, and he just wouldn’t accept his club is one of the main protagonists, even after admitting his mate had just got a season ticket after being on the waiting list for 25 years! Proper cult

The only thing we're missing on Market Street is one of these.

You can buy tickets for a Barcelona match in the home ends from kiosks located on the Ramblas.

Without any doubt Liverpool FC has the highest number of plastics and day trippers in the UK. Much worse than United in my view and on a par with clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid whose home support is dominated by tourists and corporates. I have been to Anfield 40 plus times with City and numerous other times as a guest when I worked in Liverpool. Their support is a myth. When Everton had success Goodison was always much louder for atmosphere.

I did that twice at the Camp Nou for City matches and had a much better view than the crap away section. The stadium is literally full of tourists.

How times have changed.

I remember going to anfield as a young lad in the mid sixties in the days of Roger Hunt and St John and it was a cauldron, never heard anything like it since.

The first time I went to Anfield in 74 it was a cauldron. It was like a bear pit on and off the pitch and they didn't need to do a cheesy singalong version of YNWA before the game started. It was pay on the gate and you had to get there two hours before kick-off to get in. It was a fantastic atmosphere but these days it is dire despite the constant media hype.

Don't hold your breath - it is Soriano's dream becoming a local yet global team

The local global paradox I called it at the time, but I wasn't popular for not liking it especially this bit:

"The challenge for a global football team is to turn its fans into customers" - we had JG lined up as manager so no one questioned it, but it has happened.

He did his job as has Danny Wilson.
It won’t be long until we play a team with a proper set of fans and have as many in the City stands as we did Madrid daytrippers and random daytrippers just taking in a CL game the other night.

Madrid fans are pathetic. Their Madristas don’t travel in numbers at all and all their daytrippers are mild Yank-like sports fans who are half’n’half scarf videoing the match wankers.

However, like you say, look at where Soriano comes from and look at what happened when they played Eintracht Frankfurt a few years ago in the Europa League quarterfinal - they had as much of a percentage of the Camp Nou as all the Madridiots and Champions League tourists at the Etihad the other night and completely took over the Camp Nou.

The Boixos Nois atmosphere section beind the goal at the Camp Nou all walked out in disgust at what had happened to their stadium and didn’t come back.

Then, in the subsequent days, Barça (the club) blamed Barcelona fans for what had happened and washed their hands of all responsibility despite most of those tickets Frankfurt fans got hold of being from the ticket sites we know all about.

Some day soon there’s going to be a major dangerous disturbance at a football game. The wrong set of fans are going to get too many tickets at the wrong stadium and the home fans aren’t going to walk out like the Barça fans did against Frankfurt, there’s going to be a riot, and people are going to get seriously injured or worse at a football game soon.

Absolute worst thing that could happen would be to draw Celtic, they’d absolutely take over our ground. As a lot of Blues don’t like them, I could see it going off in a big way

Look at Rangers at Old Trafford a few weeks ago. Galatasaray there too. Twente fans at the Etihad for our game against Watford. Madridiots and random non-City (nor Madrid) fans all around the stadium the other night (in many blocks, City fans were like Vimto diluted in a pint of water).

The warning signs are there - a set of fans are going to turn up en mass at a stadium and the mix of supporters will see a riot.

I would be amazed if the fans in the City end were anything other than locals; that's one of the reasons why a lot of seasoncard holders choose not to go to midweek games. The argument that they are largely tourists is just based on impressions and prejudice.

Against Salford there were loads of families with kids. The kids have half and half scarves. Are they tourists too? I hate the idea of half and half scarves. It actually makes me mad when I think a City fan would wear the crest of Real Madrid. But if I stop and think, I can understand it.

I get why this game has provoked so much comment because it was a very different crowd to usual but there's a lot of guesswork going on, myself included.

Away fans get in the home ends when home fans don't buy up tickets. That's always been the case. I did that at Blackburn away and elsewhere, and I am sure you've done it too. I also celebrated like mad at Blackburn too.

Can I ask if you were there against Madrid? you can't possibly have been with a statement like " I would be amazed if the fans in the city end were anything but locals", how many locals turn up and tell the home fans they hope that City lose and call people Racist id they challenge them on their Madrid scarves being on show?

The word will get round the country. ‘It’s easy enough to go in the home end at City and there will be no mither.’ Like the neutral end at Fulham. But it will end up being a team like Middlesbrough or Birmingham and like you say it’s going to kick off properly.
