2025 Rugby League Season

0 - 0 sounds like a cracking game, can see the already dwindling crowds flocking back en masse for such entertainment.

Can't wait for a week on Saturday when the six nations returns, proper rugby

You stick to your hooray Henry egg chasers.

It’s because Rugby League players know how to tackle. That’s why every successful rugby union team employs ex-Rugby League players as Defensive Coaches.

And, ‘entertainment’…

Rugby League is Pep Guardiola, while rugby union is Tony Pulis.

I'm sure it sent shockwaves around the world, two teams, 7 miles apart get a decent attendance.
Union is a far superior version of rugby, not even close, where's the skill set and tactics in league, nowhere, 6 shit tackles then hand it over.

The viewing and participation figures suggest otherwise.
One Direction are one of the biggest selling groups in British music history, Manchester United are one of the biggest supported clubs in the world… doesn’t make them good.

Tactics?

I watch rugby union as well as league and find that Union teams (even at the very highest level) are often clueless at knowing how to move defensive lines around under the ruck to create miss-match situations where 2v1, 3v2 or 4v3 situations arise.

Where Union does seldomly figure it out - take England’s winning try against France last week - they are directly copied from rugby league set moves that have been going on for years and have only just come into union in recent years with the influx of ex-RL players becoming prominent in Union coaching roles.

You don't have to be good to be popular, both shite but very well marketed.
League has tried everything possible, they've tried France, Wales, London, Canada but failed miserably, they're taking the circus to Vegas, nobody is interested, it's a simple sport for simple minds, it's popularity is on the decline for a reason, it's not union.

Take it your not a fan

Great defence from both teams but 0-1 won't help to expand the game.

The sport may well rue the decision to hand leadership of the game to IMG rather than the Hearns. We need stars to promote, not just more digital marketing.

Serious question here mate (I didn't know that the Hearn's were looking at Rugby League). Do you think they could succeed in a team sport? They have worked wonders for Snooker, Darts and Boxing, where its individual sportsmen who they make rich! I think they would be hated in team sports!

They backed away because Super League doesn’t have any superstars and they are right. I think they would have gone for it if there were potential mega stars in Super League.

I’m not sure if they would have succeeded in a team sport or not mate. I think they would have given it a decent go.

Why belittle it mate? Its a working man's sport that attracts the local community (of whichever team is playing)! I can guarantee they enjoy watching their local team, just like we used to with City before the tourist fans!

Cheers for the info pal!

No doubt they would have given it a go!

Unfortunately, I think both codes of Rugby have potentially peaked.
League has tried to move outside Lancs & Yorks, but has failed, even in Wales & the North East where you would think there could be some see some support.
For Union, the English Premiership has lost 2 clubs in the last couple of years, so cannot really be judged a success story. In Wales the 4 regions are very poorly supported and the national team is ranked #12 in the World.
Only in Ireland does it seem to be succeeding and growing.
Scotland only has 2 teams with average support.
The fact is that both games are too wearing on the players are getting fecked-up with the constant tackling in League.
In Union, there is also the head/neck damage done by scrummaging and also regular head injuries.
Parents are taking their kids away from both codes because of serious potential injuries.
I love both codes, but feel that both have to introduce, at all levels, "safer" rules to decrease serious injuries.
The upcoming compensation claims from professional players may also be a reason why the rules will have to adapt...

Tempted to buy a ticket for next Fridays game versus Catalan as it doesn’t clash with City.

Why the fuck didn’t Wigan try for a drop goal? They had great position three times to set one up.

Union is a game for blokes who are either too posh, too fat, or too uncoordinated (or a combination of the 3) to play football. Union is only bigger due to the above mentioned posh twats dominating the media in this country - contrast that with Australia, where league is more popular.

Was at the game last night ( Wigan Warriors season ticket holder ) possibly the coldest night I have ever experienced watching live rugby or football that easterly windchill was unreal . After all the hype and build up and a near 22,000 crowd turning out to watch the league’s opener two things stood out for me ……..
Firstly how the game was officiated . It was officiated totally different to last season all tackles above the shoulder were allowed to play on and holding onto a player after a tackle allowed for longer . Is this the new president for this season without directives ?? It certainly allowed a more flowing game and no players feigned injury like almost all the time last season and no head injury assessments . Makes you wonder ? Good thing or bad thing I don’t know time will tell but there was no blatant cheating last night despite how it was officiated totally different.
Secondly the captains challenge, imho it’s going to be a total waste of time as the video ref will side with the infield ref every single time !
The game last night ……. both teams cancelled each other out on a terrible sticky pitch where the quick flair players just couldn’t get any momentum and it turned into a slug fest . But Harry Smith wtf 6 meters out under the sticks with 1 minute left on the clock and doesn’t go for a drop goal ????? Unbelievable !!!

At a sportsmans dinner for a rugby union team..

The great Laurie Daley - "Rugby league is a simple game played by simple people. Rugby union is a complex game played by wankers"
