Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

First thing needed as a CM, good communication skills and to constantly be bossing players into correct positions. Looked very assured for his first 90 minutes at the club.
It was infectious. It seemed to give all around him confidence too. When the chips have been down for us, the only talkers we have left are Dias (mostly injured) & Bernardo. This kid in his first real outing for us was like the outfield captain we've been missing.

Another thing I noticed was the partnership he struck up with Axeman. Khusanov received the ball under a little bit of pressure & the sensible balls were to either Ederson or Stones who was around our left back area. Axeman moved into space & feigned a pass, but flicked the ball instead to Nico, which transitioned us immediately from defence to attack.

We'd lost the confidence to pull off passes like that for months. It was Nico offering himself up for the pass & the growing confidence of Axeman to attempt it that made us look more like the City we know.

The three new YOUNG signings certainly made their presence felt today.

The performance was pretty amazing considering the form Newcastle were in coming into the game and the fact we're trying to bed new players into the system. A lot of great performances and promising signs. I think Newcastle abandoned their usual cautious approach given our recent poor form, decided to attack us and got punished as a result.
We'd lost our fear factor but I think after today it's back. Teams will be worried to.push up and press us now as we have blistering pace and movement upfront. Also we got our passing mojo back, controlling the game aside from a couple of blips. Onwards and upwards.

First signs that things are going in the right direction.

Pep left out a few big hitters today which is also positive. The process to replace those great players is underway.

Very positive result considering the form we have been in for months.

Hopefully todays win is the first building block to a new version of city. Shame it’s Madrid next as in a month or so we would be ready

The club has did a good job and it should be acknowledged. In time under a reinvigorated pep some of those players will hit new heights.

Harder tests to come but positive steps and all that.

I've been informed that at every level of national football he's been the Captain and it showed today.
Makes perfect sense. I've never seen one so young, effectively making his debut, but look so commanding. The other odd thing was everyone was following his instructions, even the senior players.

Could we have a new midfield general on our hands?

Either that was a rag on 606 messing about or it was a complete muppet City fan wanting Pep out after the game. My guess he was a rag muppet because he said he was a long time City fan and was born close to Maine road but he sounded like he was down sarf!

Not a bad performance from anyone, although Phil couldn’t seem to make anything work. The lads who have been getting pilloried recently (Rico, Gundo, Eddie) all had excellent games and it showed just how important a good pivot is in allowing Gundo to play the game we brought him back to play.

Very tidy game for Khusanov. Wouldn’t know he was brand new and didn’t speak English. That train is going to run a few people over this season.

Also, what an outstanding “debut” for Nico G! Never went missing, always available, ready with a tackle or a cushioned pass, comfortable playing with all three lines as opposed to being a “left-right shuttler,” and showed a commanding presence in the middle of the park. We could have quite the midfield next season!!!!

Lastly, three assured finishes from Omar. Clearly a confident lad, but not so “confident” that he didn’t put in an extraordinary shift even after the goals. And, he is bringing out the best in Erling, both with their respective routes and the way the team is looking for the space for them both to exploit.

OUTSTANDING TEAM PERFORMANCE!!!

We were linked with Guimaeres who is a very good player but Nico Gonzalez made a fantastic debut. The comment from Pep about a mini-Rodri was one a lot of blues were making. On the bus home I heard loads of blues making that comparison.

Would never have predicted that!

So pleased and relieved!

Savio was amazing and so confident now.
