Perceptions of who are a big clubs and who are parvenu interlopers are often conditioned by your youth.Spurs are a big club in the media only, and I'm pretty sure it's because both Spurs and the media are located in London
Ever since I can remember, football on TV has been dominated by pundits from the usual 'big' (successful) clubs: united, Liverpool, Arsenal and... Spurs? They've won 2 League Cups in 35 years! If things were actually based on recent success, we'd be seeing lots of ex-Everton faces instead
Honestly, it's why I've never been able to stand them
I had the image of Spurs being a big team because of their double win in 1960-61, another FA Cup win in 1962, and a European Cup Winners Cup in 1963. My second match at Maine Road was City against Spurs in 1963 and I was amazed that, relegation bound, City won 1-0 through an Alex Harley goal. I was in awe that City had beaten the mighty Spurs!
Since then, Spurs have won the square root of fuck-all apart from a few cups. Think of a few more successful teams over that sixty odd year period and you come up with the likes of Ipswich Town, Everton, Leeds United, Aston Villa, Derby County. Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City. That is excluding the likes of City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.
