The Album Review Club - Week #192 (page 1292) - 3ft High & Rising - De La Soul

Having now read the other reviews, I see I was a tad repetitive here and there. But I should have added I am no fan of poets. Poets fuck up bands. Here I think the poetry as it is elevates the music rather than fucking up the band. But I forgot to mention a bit of cringe I felt once or twice when MES traipsed a wee bit too close to uber-douchebag Jim Morrison territory. But he never got that close to the line, thankfully.

He'd have to grow his hair to be Jim Morrison #unexpectedRadiohead

The Fall - Live At The Witch Trials

Well this was a hard one to decipher I felt, at first listen I was definitely in the camp that thought most of this was garbage and shouty bollox - however repeated listens and you can get to appreciate a lot of the base, riffs and distinctive vocals - the documentary was a big help especially as a Southern fairy who didn’t grow up in dark smoggy boddington world of Manchester - but it made me ‘get’ Mark E Smith and what the Fall represent, I did a brief listen to their best of and later albums and feel I would score their future Brix Smith era more highly as they sounded far more pleasing on the ear, some really good songs, feel I need a dedicated month to The Fall and go through their whole catalogue.
Still, despite not particularly liking the songs on here, overall it’s raw, full of energy and unique.
Opener ‘Frightened’ and ‘Rebellious Jukebox’ the standouts. Good pick!

5/10

Live at the witch trials.

Like the most recent reviews there are parts of this record i like but no songs i would consider great or even good.
Still it set me up for the Wonderful and frightening world of the fall years later with Brix and Craig Scanlon hitting the mark straight away with Lay of the land and my favourite period of The Fall had begun.
I will give this a low mark of 4 but any recording in the Brix years would be an 8 at least.
4.

Rob stole a bit of my tunder in his review. I was going down the line of...years ago when still living in London I went to see the play "Art"...
As I said, certainly not marmite for me as I couldnt quite work out whether I liked this or not. the punk element was good , it challenged but then MES himself was perhaps a little too challenging.
Certainly unique and so its a 5 from the Derry jury

I am a bit surprised there haven't been more comparisons to the Idles nomination or week tbh, or a revisiting of some of the views there. Imo there are a few overlaps.

Yes, I agree. I did think there were alot of similarities and should have perhaps gone a bit deeper with my rather brief review/comments.
I certainly enjoyed Idles a lot more, thinking that the musicianship was far better and in Jo Talbot, the vocalist was far better.
I know a few people commented that they got a bit tired of Paul Heatons vocals and whilst totally different I think in the end it was MES himself that lowered my mark

I feel like IDLES have a fuller sound and lyrically isn't as poetic

I'm probably in the minority here, but I am a sucker for poetry in lyrics and music. So I quite liked that. I feel I didn't fully take them in though, they didn't seep in the way some of that kind do. But as I already mentioned, that shit takes time and perseverance (as all poetry does), more than a week allows. Well for me at least.

Like OB1 I’d been avoiding the Fall mainly due to MES vocals and delivery.Musically this was ok as it had a simple Punk/Post Punk which I quite like, there were also some amusing lyrics but sadly I couldn’t listen more than twice such was my aversion to MES voice.

3/10

Predictably, the scores were all over the place this week, but 17 members cast their vote to leave Live at the Witch Trials by the Fall with an average of 5.88.

Thanks to @journolud for the nomination.

This week's offering comes courtesy of @mrbelfry - he's threatened to nominate something that I won't like for the 4th consecutive week, so whilst I prepare the cotton wool, three quarters of you can start celebrating.

I think you might have liked my original pick but they are a band that have some Fallish influence so I'm going a little leftfield to give us all a break from the whiney white guys. This would have been an album I was going to nominate anyway but I felt like I had some reputation to repair after my first nomination so was gonna leave it a while but timing is everything. Easy clues below
