President Trump

Slightly (perhaps) off topic, film on Amazon Prime at the moment, Civil War. Set in, you guessed it, the good old US of A. Good film, story told through the eyes of a photojournalist. Particular liked the line about the conflict starting whilst the Pres was in his third term.
Good thing we don't have that 3rd term problem :)

Look at how many times Trump squirms when he's asked about Putin. This is a guy who normally just blurts out any old shite and acts the strongman, but he is so cagey when it comes to Putin, and almost afraid of saying anything at all. Subservient like behaviour.

Alarm bells are ringing loud and clear.

So it’s the mechanism not the message?

Did the mechanism change people’s minds or was that the massive migration issues that have dominated European politics for the recent past? Wasn’t that what Brexit was about for many? Isn’t that why Meloni was elected? Macron is in trouble? AfD is so resurgent?

All of that is the result of a mechanism dragging people by the nose to a place they weren’t already occupying or wanted to go?

Nah.
It is always fun when CB turns around and plays ' "cut through the bullshit. " Doesn't happen often enough though :)

Newsnight are interviewing some Trump-aligned think tank chair Carla Sands (clearly a multimillionaire). Oh my.

"The UK has more people in prison for what they believe than Russia has".
Darbyshire laughed at her.

My goodness, she's not just swallowed the KoolAid, she is the KoolAid.
In 2022 about 400 people were arrested in Russia for something they said on social media, in the U. K in the same year, over 3000 people were arrested for something they said on Social Media. Mind you there are about 150 million Russians to 70 million in the UK.

In short, she is not the one who is drunk on the koolaid

<citation needed>

Edit, just had a quick Google search. Seems 3,000 people were arrested, around 30 charged and 17 convicted.

This a complete non comparable and it’s worrying who you are following to think that it’s either true or worth repeating.

We learn something everyday :)
Yeah, you might finally work out that most British people have no issue with the police arresting people for the incitement of violence or whatever.

Most seem to have sailed close to the wind, with only the truly abhorrent getting banged up.

That’s not a freedom of speech thing.

So it's nothing to do with Trump or Musk, it's the democrats' fault?

What?
I don't know where you're getting that in my post. A political party in a democracy has to address the concerns of voters if it wants to win, and Democrats failed to do that in 2024. Expecting Trump and Le Pen, Farage etc. to become more reasonable is a fool's game. You need to meet voters where they're at.

If I were involved in Labour or a mainstream party in Europe, I would be taking a lesson from the US elections and changing tack on immigration and cost of living, even if I personally thought those concerns were mainly overblown or outside the control of government.

But most who were arrested did not incite violence. Perhat more of the "whatever"

And there in lies the problem. Its the "Whatever" that's the issue.

We don’t know what the posted, but as they weren’t charged, it doesn’t really matter that much, does it?

It also might make them think that they are accountable for the stuff they say.

I assume you’d be an advocate of getting rid of all libel laws? After all, shouldn’t anybody be able to say anything about anyone?

Not all. Just the ones history has shown to be counterproductive at best and pro- subjugation at worst.

We have long standing laws against personal defamation, true threats and incitement to violence. But you and I know well that this is not what most arrests or police visits are for in your country.
