Still need squad depth and we aren't going to sign too many players at once to fill the gaps.
It's also clearly not going to happen (selling him I mean).

Pep has made it clear that it's the older and/or injury prone players the club is looking to move on.

Not somebody when called upon who gives one of the highest efforts on the team every game.

We all know he isn't a first choice player for any position, but he is on relatively cheap wages, and can backup multiple spots, and is fit. That's good for squad depth.

Pep's verdict on Rico pre spurs:

"He is an exceptional defender."
Pep is not the sort of Manager who throws his players under the bus and will always back them. Its called good man management.
There is only one player I have seen him do that to and that was "Fatty" Phillips when he came back from holidays only 5lb overweight.
Pep later apologised and said he should never have said that to the media and I doubt he ever will again.

Phillips was that upset after the incident he shot straight down to Burger King to snaffle a few whoppers to comfort himself :)

He didn't play badly, but teams are targeting him and his lack of pace and positional awareness at right back just aren't good enough for this level

He is a natural offensive minded player and will be a decent squad player for us if he stays. But with the players we've already got and potential signings, i just don't think he's going to play much in the near future, so will that be enough for him?

That's how I see it

If he is a right back, then it creates an obvious target for opponents, as we've seen. Surely at our level you can't be letting opponents know exactly who to go at. If that's the case, then we can't really say he's a good right back

He does his best work higher up the pitch in small spaces, but there's always going to be more accomplished attacking players than him.

I don't see him as a long term nailed on starter for us unless we become a bottom half team and don't attract top players anymore. He's always gonna be a squad player whose main chance of a run in the team is when we are struggling with injuries.

To be fair to the lad, he's pretty much been used as a utility player in different positions to plug holes when needed. I don't think that's can be great to a players development in some ways. Maybe it adds a bit of versatility but surely it loses some focus on really trying to master a position.

To sum up- he’s just not good enough anywhere on the pitch, unless we’re 4 up with 5 mins to play.

He is a squad player at best. The circumstances this season where he has had to play most games highlights this and his limits.

Surround him with a fully functioning team and he is able to rotate starting or as a sub and doing a job.

But as a week in, week out starter its a no.

Will he be sold in the summer, i would say probably not, and will remain to fill in as and when required

As much as I’d like to see him improve I don’t think he will. As others have already said he’s not going to be a regular starter next season. He’s always targeted when playing at right back. Madrid did it in the first leg when he came on. Liverpool did the same. Even Orient. Tells you everything you need to know. That said i can’t see him leaving anytime soon and I think he will be a squad player and regular bench warmer.

At 20 years old, a rotating squad player surrounded by a fully functioning team is exactly what he should be.

The club has a long list of problems it needs to sort out and Rico Lewis isn’t one of them.

Him being exposed is a symptom not a cause in my opinion.

I’d keep him around until he bulks up and irons out some flaws in his game. We’ve seen him do some very nice and tidy things on the ball. He can play anywhere.

I think he has a lot of talent and wouldn’t be playing as much as this if not for injuries, Walker declining and then leaving mid season etc.

We just need to sign a top class right back and allow Lewis to be eased in properly.

We haven’t had a youngster play so much football for Pep at such a young age, I’d wager he’s played more games than Foden at the same age?

That’s because he’s smart enough on the ball to understand what Pep wants.

FYI the last slow, weak defensive player Pep was obsessed with, Eric Garcia, is now playing good football for Barcelona, now he’s filled in. I think he’s scored 8 headers this season and can play at CB, RB and CDM.

Most youth take time, and he’s certainly good enough to be a rotation player when we’re at the top of our game.

Only 2cm short of Phil and actually weighs more, all the bulking up in the world wont make him go faster or become better he's not one for the future for us mate.

If we want to start winning things again we need to be a tad more ruthless in the keeping players that aren't up to scratch dept.

Think some of you Rico haters need to dive into his stats, he's scored more goals for us than roque Santa Cruz and played more than Darren huckerby!!

34 appearances this season, pep loves him
Glauber berti only played once, so play time doesn't really reflect how good a player is

Santa Cruz and Huckerby you say?!
Must reevaluate.

We were pretty ruthless with Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Frimpong, Felix Nmecha, Aleix Garcia etc who could all easily play a part for us in our current iteration.

Players take time to develop. Our fans are stuck, concurrently demanding we both play our youth and that our youth isn’t good enough.

We made mistakes, but in this instance after constantly trying him in games we haven't seen any improvement.

And what would have happened had we played Felix Nmecha at 19 and 20 years old? Or Frimpong or Morgan Rogers or Bernabe?

You’d be saying the same shit. Give the lad a chance. He looked quality last season and at the start of this year.

Which games have you been watching? He has had plenty of chances and in many fans opinion he isn't and wont be good enough.

And he wasn't quality last season either.
