Ballot or no, there was strong support for the strike in most areas of the country. The tactics she used against them were brutal. You mean the leader of the miners’ union that didn’t call a ballot on the strike?

Don't understand this view at all, are you suggesting we shouldn't have fought for the Falklands? Or that it shouldn't have been an election issue. Not having a go, just wondering. She got back into power on the back of dead servicemen in the Falklands.
For that she can rot in hell

Apologies for keeping the off-topic going
Trump/Vance will wake up one morning soon and realise what a fuck up they have made
Trump and Vance parrot the Putin line that Ukraine is on its arse, that they've lost the war, they're dead, done, a corpse still standing only because it is propped up by the West, and chief amongst those doing the propping is the USA. One only has to threaten to kick the prop away and Ukraine will accept whatever surrender terms Putin and Trump desire.
But Trump over played his hand. Now, as never before in the post war world, Europe alone is uniting to face a common enemy. The UK, France and Germany are the main drivers, but with the exception of Hungary, all of Europe is looking at ways to prop up Ukraine for at least two years, while they cobble together their own security backstop, we're looking at the beginnings of a European army in all but name.
Right now the lines to Ankara must be clogged with European leaders sweet talking Erdogan, if he can be persuaded to throw his weight behind this he can name his price.
Things will move very quickly now, as a Brit and a European I feel a sense of excitement that something good might be forged out of this terrible situation.
Trump says he wants to make a America Great Again, it seems the oaf might have inadvertently started the process of making Europe Great Again.
MEGA. Are they going to be selling baseball caps?Trump and Vance parrot the Putin line that Ukraine is on its arse, that they've lost the war, they're dead, done, a corpse still standing only because it is propped up by the West, and chief amongst those doing the propping is the USA. Consistently negligible pollsters, I fancy.I’m no fan of Thatcher but political experts/pollsters have consistently said that the “Falklands Factor” was negligible.
MEGA. Are they going to selling baseball caps?
That will work well in Greece and Cyprus. MEGA means great in Greek (well, big).Trump and Vance parrot the Putin line that Ukraine is on its arse, that they've lost the war, they're dead, done, a corpse still standing only because it's propped up by the West, primarily the USA. One only has to threaten to kick the prop away and Ukraine will accept whatever surrender terms Putin and Trump desire.

Bring it back on topic. Trump would have had Thatcher in the White House offering a peace deal in exchange for the USA getting an interest in lamb chops.Don't understand this view at all, are you suggesting we shouldn't have fought for the Falklands? TBF if the govt did know beforehand, they were hardly going to tell you were they :) I would have expected diplomatic efforts were being made, which obviously came to nothing. I'm no fan of Thatcher but the government response at the time to the invasion seemed to be what the majority of people expected? I was however still at school when it happened so my political interest was zero so I may be completely wrongMy post at the top of the page explains some of it

Trump as mediator for peace? If Trump is expected to act as mediator and get a deal done for peace then he cannot start yelling and screaming at Putin and then expect to have a conversation with Putin to make a deal. Obviously there are those who want the war to continue. On top of that they want an unending supply of funds and arms from US to keep this going. With high deficits and painful cuts coming up I think US should hand this over to Europe to take the leadership role and let Europe increase their defense funding to 10-15% of their GDP and start a draft to fight this war if they want to win it. US should walk away from this quagmire before it drags the country further into a hole.
I was in Belize when it kicked off. Came back to UK to find myself chosen to go on an exercise called Welsh Falcon with the Welsh Guards, Scots Guards and Gurkhas. Even got to the stage where the OC and SSM went to tell the wife I was going straight there. She was pregnant at the time with our first and they swapped me out with someone else. Then they decided to send me anyway on the SS Rangatira and stopped giving medals out the day before we were eligible…Same as mate but it did her no harm.
I was serving at the time as part of a immediate reaction force we new six weeks before it kicked off.
We were told everything had to be ready to go we didn't know where or when.
Odds on was Ireland Disney land was a 100 to one amongst the betting feternity.
We had noidea it was the Falklands but I bet the British government did and did nothing
As I said ( we )didn't know it was the Falklands six weeks before but I bet she did.
We could have had thousands of British troops on the ground long before.
And the Argentinians would never invaded
The strikes and picket lines were no family picnic area but to send in the riot squad in the numbers that she did and with the orders that were given to them was unforgivable. I hope she's burning in hell for what she did to communities built on the industry, the fucking hard faced bitch. The tactics she used against them were brutal.
Like a lotTrump as mediator for peace?
I wouldn't trust him to mediate a game of Hungry Hippo's. Sure, Trump wanted a deal, but it isn't with Ukraine, it with Russia, specifically Putin. Pretty much everything he's done since inauguration day has favourable to Russia.
Putin's military forces have been utterly embarrassed by Ukraine, which his hardly surprising given Russia's top generals overstating their readiness and capabilities for decades. It's blindingly obvious that Putin has now turned to Trump to make a deal for him which essentially involves the ultimate surrender of land to Putin. This will hand Putin the 'victory' he so desperately needs.
And for someone who's bullshit phoney existence was built on the 'art of the deal' he fucked it up in spades with that White House shit show. His master will be less than pleased.
