You have to remember that:

- Trump is a narcissist and he is delusional. He really believes he can be the world’s peacemaker and has repositioned US just to get Putin on side. He thinks he can repivot once the Ukraine war is over.
He wants, and believes he can win, the Nobel Peace Prize.

Everything is personal with Trump. Zelensky has offended him at some point (possibly by "campaigning" with Kamala in Trump's mind), so he's on a revenge mission and the Ukrainian people are of no consequence. Same with Trudeau. Meanwhile Putin is no doubt quietly massaging his ego.
