Nottingham Forest (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

In more than a few games this season we seem to have morphed into Arsenal in the latter days of Wenger namely pass, pass etc with no end product unless we can literally walk it into the net.
Nico did hit the post with a screamer from outside the box tbf

Agreed. A major clear out is needed. Will it happen? I doubt it. I don't think the club would allow that many established players to leave, irrespective of the fact that many of them are not producing the goods.
Indeed. Plus, we possibly lose a chunk of the transfer window because we are playing in that new tournament which may cut down our ability to sign players?
There's no way we can let 7/8 go and bring in 6/7 new players in the one window, it's just not feasible.

but he was, and then it's up to the GK to dig us out with a simple save, which he didn't

I've just watched the goal again and it's bloody criminal from Ederson and Gvardiol. First Gvardiol is asleep and Hudson -Odoi is in acres of space. It was a forty yard pass but he still showed no urgency to get across. He ambles and actually looks like he's never played football before so poor is his efforts to defend. Then Ederson has to save that, he just has to. Shocking all round.

Not only us though I've just seen the Southampton goal at Anfield, a real comedy that one.

Felt like Forest had really done their homework by looking at the reverse fixture & how Liverpool defended against us. Doubled up on Doku & Savio, centre backs always in the right place to defend the 6 yard box. We didn’t adapt. They defended well & played it like an away fixture.

Subs baffled me. I get the nervousness about the yellow cards, but with no service to Haaland, it seemed we needed to try something different if doku and savio couldnt get through. Perhaps pairing Grealish and de bruyne on the left. Also have no idea how Marmoush is supposed to fit into that system.
Not very different to how Plymouth set up against us. Only difference is they have two pacy wingers who actually had intent to get forward when they managed to get the ball back.

The Grealish, de Bruyne and Gvardiol link up down the left could’ve dragged a defender out to create space for a ball to go in. Unfortunately our movement in the box is stagnant but hard to find anyone with how packed it was.

I know I'm a FOC but am I alone in finding myself saying have a bloody shot man! Or get a cross in quick. I know the box is crowded but we don't have a go. Pass, pass, pass plays into the hands of teams like Forest who defend well.

Very poor and ill-prepared performance again. We never, ever change what we do. Forest learned from the spanking we gave them and closed the middle of the park knowing that we’d have to play wide and that we’d do absolutely fuck all with it. We’re so slow and this zero risk football is fucking boring and toothless beyond belief.

14 shots and 3 on target is woeful but happens every week. It’s so easy to see where we’re failing and yet the manager and coaching staff have not done a single thing to change it all season. The system doesn’t work any more.

Their goal comes from a decent ball over the top, played by a player who had nobody within 7 yards of him to close him down. Apologetic defending just backing off and then a properly poor “effort” by Ederson to get a hand to it.

Just not good enough again. I’m not mad, I’m just perplexed as to what Pep is seeing and why he is sticking with it.

A week now to do some more rondo and short passing in training before Brighton go at us whilst we waltz around like we’re 4 nil up.

Marmoush arrived with credit for being one of the best dead ball takers in the German league. He's chopped down on the edge of the box, who takes the free kick?

Going to be a lot of disappointment come the end of the window since most of the 7/8 that some want sold aren’t good values for any sane buying club.

We’ve been sussed out simple as that.
Has Pep got the know how to change things is another matter.
Managers like players run in cycles and maybe this one has run it’s course
.

It wouldn’t be if it had creativity in the final third.

We don’t create anything in tight games or against good teams.

The pass pass pass football is supposed to be to get into situations where you can do something dangerous.

However: nobody slots through the runner when he breaks the line and is in space to run at goal, nobody plays those chips over the flat back line, nobody gets to the byline and pulls is back, nobody finds the right foot of Haaland where he can play it to his left in space for a shot (always seems to be fired at his shins where he’s not good enough and too lanky to control balls like that in the PL), the only player who looks for a one-two in and around the box is a centre back playing as a left wing back, we don’t shoot from distance enough, nobody can cross, there absolutely no link-up play between Foden+Haaland (and never has been)…
Nailed it mate absolutely spot on!

He won POTY last year, do you think he's had different coaching this year?

The midfield has grown old together. But a coach with as many titles as Pep doesn't win them by coaching the creativity out of his players.
Agreed. I keep hearing this shit about players having their individuality coached out of them as if we haven't watched Bernardo, Mahrez and KDB in their primes.

ederson made a worldy before than near post fk up,just unbelievable.

Frustrating.
While we are witnessing the end of an era, it is the beginning of another, for us and for others.
The game has changed, and we are seeing tactically astute coaches working with highly athletic players. They defend deep, and hope for one chance to seal the points. Successful teams will not be able to play only one way against such teams.

For us, I don't think we were too much off it, though the result is really disappointing.
At the beginning of the second half I would have replaced Bernardo with Marmoush, and dropped Phil into central midfield, while Marmoush played off Haaland. I would not have changed the wingers though they received few opportunities from quality full-backs supported by athletic midfielders. I would have done that to give us a more direct option and to pose more questions of the NFFC defenders, who knew what we were going to do too often in the game. The Forest manager is top-drawer, IMO, but we could have done more. We have to be more varied in our attacks to disrupt these athletic, low-block teams.

I popped into the Match Day thread and noticed the comments about Rico even before he came on to the pitch. I thought they were embarrassing and I'd be ashamed to make such posts. Replacing two players on yellow cards was not a mistake, especially in the case of Gonzalez, who was carded and then frustrated and at risk.

As for our MOM, Khusanov, what a player he looks to be. Genuinely, a potential world-class performer.

Mind you he got hold of a young Argentinian no 10 at Barcelona who maybe could have done better if he hadn't been coached by Pep.
