Wasn't the foul near the edge of the box? I might be wrong, only watching in the background.

I actually rewound the game to check & the foul was a lot nearer the D of the box than where the free kick was taken from.
Add the extra yard or two the wall was back & you have a much easier chance of getting the ball up and down & on target.
Just another example of how a ref can influence a game.
