New CL Format Thoughts

I like the new format. The old one was stale.
Should throw up more exciting draws.
As far as I'm concerned if a team qualifies to enter it then they have every right to win it, even if they are not champions of their leagues.
If we qualify for next seasons we will be in there as 5th choice (probably).
Anyone bemoaning the lack of new away trips needs to realise that away trips in the Premier league are pretty much static anyway.
At least in chumps there should be some obscure places to visit, irregularly.
Anyway, as long as Madrid don't win it, I'm not at all fussed who does this year.
the changed Id make is that it should be the league winners from the top 36 european countries then it can really be called the champions league

In the last eight four finished in the automatic qualifier places the other four from the sixteen play-off teams. I suspect that 50/50 split happened under the previous format i.e. four group winners and four runners up.

I just do not like the extra matches, there is far too much workload on the players as it is.
It’s the clubs that keep pushing for more games so they can’t complain.

City's campaign was disastrous, Liverpool's was near perfect until the penalty shoot-out, yet City played as many games as Liverpool in the competition.

I don't dislike the new format. Feel like as Champions maybe the Pot 1 teams should get some benefit and maybe an easier league phase, but they want the big teams to play each other so can understand why they haven't. I wonder if they could consider the initial pots when it came to deciding who plays who after the playoffs. Feels wrong that the dippers got PSG despite winning the league but Villa got Bruges. Wrong, but funny! I'd be pissed off if that was how it worked for us though!

The group stage was boring and I would imagine everyone has had a bit of a wake up call now and we might start seeing the Pot 1 teams push a bit harder to ensure they make the top 8. I was expecting it to be a case of the majority of Pot 1 and 2 in the top 16 and for them to have quite an easy playoff so the last 16 ended up exactly how you'd expect. But some big teams have already fallen and would have been in the QFs in the majority of previous campaigns.

It would be good if the team who finished 1st gets to choose their opponents

Although that's a valid suggestion, I think there would be a lot more brutal results as the gulf between the top euro leagues and the bottom is vast.
There's a danger of it becoming ridiculous.

Have you seen the state of some of those teams in the Thursday night leagues.
Of the 8 teams that came top in this years CL league phase, the only team still left in the competition is Inter that are actually champions of the league in their own country.

Meeting soon to discuss a change to the rule for an unintentional double touch from a penalty
You couldn't make it up.
Should also be allowed to make any remaining subs after extra time is over. That way you could 'sub' defenders off or just any players who didn't fancy it.

You could also put Ortega in goals for the shootout while still having Ederson on to take a pen.

New format isn't a disaster but it feels wrong that domestic champions in major leagues still have to face two pot 1 teams.
I'd also change it so the top sixteen qualified, but that would leave a lot of dead games in weeks 7 and 8, and possibly some even earlier.

Yeah those are my thoughts.

In typical fashion given our luck in the CL which has felt like we have been on the wrong side of rule changes each time, we probably would have either finished 2nd or 3rd in our group and as a result possibly had an easier last 16 tie or been in the Europa League with a strong chance of winning it. When you consider where the rags and spurs are in the league and yet could both progress tonight, even with our form we would have been favourites.

My issue with it is being one big league, using Points, GD and GS to determine placing; whilst not all playing the same team. Very much based on the ‘luck’ of the draw. We got stinkers of away fixtures compared to others.

I get that, and you’re right, but it’s a cup competition so the luck of the draw is what it is.

It is and it isn’t... It’s a giant league which then evolves into a knock out cup competition. My point is how can you have a giant league using points gained, GD, GS to determine placings when the league stage fixtures are not comparable. Not sure what the answer is though, without reverting to a straight knock out competition, or going back to the ‘group’ format.

Didnt like the new format before the 1st game, still dont like it. How can you have a league stage where teams play random games v other teams, pure luck of the draw. At least the old format, teams qualified from groups on merit with each team in the group playing each other.

UEFA have never been averse to having an 'imbalance' - for instance, when the away goals rule (which I, for one, miss) was in place, surely it shouldn't have extended to 2nd leg extra-time, where it became a huge advantage for the away team, who after 90 mins felt perfectly at home?

Or the fact that group fixtures were always arranged in a 1-2-3-3-2-1 order, where one team might not have to face an injured star player (3rd & 4th fixtures) at any stage, but the other teams in the group would have to play against him twice?

Still prefer that to this current format, though.
