Politicians are incompetent... aren't they?

There are two fundamental issues. Career politicians and the British press, the latter of which means that anyone with a remotely colourful past would think it really isn’t worth the hassle.

The former is a huge issue imo. When you look at the cabinets of the 70s and 80s, Labour and Tory, they were replete with impressive individuals who had done something with their lives before entering politics. Many had fought in WW2.

The state of the cunts in politics now is such a stark contrast to that. With a few notable exceptions they simply aren’t people I find at all impressive or would choose to socialise with.

Not sure what the answer is tbh.
The answer starts with local councillors. And by extension local councils. Lets have some sensible independents not beholden to party lines who can address local issues and hold the traditional old farts to account and impart some new thinking.

Next, enfranchise more people. I know more 16 and 17 year olds through engagement in communities mostly through sport but also because I work in a public facing job, who I know are more intelligent and attuned to modern life than the miserable old entrenched twats who engage in politics and local issues presently. We do the yoof down by nature, but we underestimate their nous and foresight. They see their issues and have no voice at the moment.

Then we need capacity to call out failing elected officials beyond an online petition and having to wait for a by election which is usually carved up anyway with the usual candidates.

Any whiff of cronyism, old boys networks, local back scratching groups, should be challenged robustly and capacity enabled to more easily hold a new vote to shift the old guard out.

Most controversially, as their pay is an easy target for haters, MPs should be slashed by about 30% by constituency and their pay increased. This will attract more accomplished people from professions who arent attached to party lines and who arent repaying favour and serving masters.

And lastly, lets respect the civil service and acknowledge they know their area of business rather than demonise them. How can a minister or even Sec of State for an area of responsibility be in charge of Energy one year and then reshuffled the next to run the Dept of Education the next for example? Its a nonsense obviously. The ones who keep those wheels greased are clearly those who work in that area and not the Minister in charge of them. Lets have an accountable public face for each dept who isnt an MP, from the civil service, and then hold them to account, and not have old grey men in grey suits who nobody sees

Every generation says this.
And it appears they are always right does it not?

Yes in some respects (technology etc...) it could be said to be true, but in other respects (technology - social media) it isn't necessarily so.

Do we prefer the days when Britain had a defined culture or do we prefer more recent times when we have a more diverse culture?

What’s the examples of defined culture ?

There is no particular party preference here, but it really does expose the lack of competency in government.

Apart from that it is IMO entertaining to watch them squirm, and this guy is particularly good at it.

Are there any more embarrassing moments for our great and good out there? Clip away!!

I'll agree with the premise as long as there are no exemptions from your conclusion

Diverse. More interesting, more colourful and much better food.

Also, way too wide a question. Which ‘defined culture’ would you prefer? 1920’s where everyone was having a gay old time. The 1930’s economic depression and misery all round. The 1940’s - we’ll give that a miss. 1950’s bleak, bad pollution and miserable hence the 1960’s when we decided deference was out and back to a gay old time. 1970’s bad clothes, great music, strikes, three day week, telly off by ten pm and the Yorkshire Ripper. 1980’s yuppies, greed is good and society is dead. 1990’s Brit pop, Major banging Currie and Blair - a bland decade in my view.

So which culture do you pine for? Pick a decade and let me know.

I stopped engaging with it ages ago, they are all self serving cunts, can't be bothered with any sort of party politics anymore. Wake me up when we're all doing a full scale peasants revolt and setting parliament on fire I'll bring my pitchfork.

We already know your answer;-)

I’ll take the win on the increased spending over the next two years.

Given I spent the eighties working in the City as a broker, quaffing champers and snorting coke off the thighs and bellies of strippers, ‘inner Tory’ isn’t quite the burn you think it is :)

I didn't actually study any of them but I've read them all apart from Of Mice and Men which actually was on the curriculum when I was in school but I was assigned To Kill a Mockingbird instead! Glad I was such an avid reader when younger as I learnt a hell of a lot more from books than my teachers.

I read 1984 again recently and it's bloody horrifying how prescient it is. The bits about doublethink went over my head when I was younger but they are so relevant to our world today.

I think the point I was trying to make [rather poorly I admit] was in response to the every generation says this comment.... and I think you have illustrated it well why each generation might say this. I suppose it would depend upon who you are speaking to at the time and the context of the conversation, it is about what your are speaking what the as @BobKowalski says it is probably too wide a question but on the whole I think people would probably prefer the world they used to live in, their younger days... the good old days. I think I wish I was living back in the late 60's onward until the mid 80's. Others may think different as is their want.

1984 written in 1949 is the book that seems to have predicted where we are heading right now with Trump taking the part of Big Brother, and Putin and Xi leading the other totalitarian superstates.

Edit: just noticed the post by @Kippax Street 1880
It’s scary how much of 1984 seems to be a blueprint of what’s happening today.
