The answer starts with local councillors. And by extension local councils. Lets have some sensible independents not beholden to party lines who can address local issues and hold the traditional old farts to account and impart some new thinking. There are two fundamental issues. Career politicians and the British press, the latter of which means that anyone with a remotely colourful past would think it really isn’t worth the hassle.
The former is a huge issue imo. When you look at the cabinets of the 70s and 80s, Labour and Tory, they were replete with impressive individuals who had done something with their lives before entering politics. Many had fought in WW2.
The state of the cunts in politics now is such a stark contrast to that. With a few notable exceptions they simply aren’t people I find at all impressive or would choose to socialise with.
Not sure what the answer is tbh.
Next, enfranchise more people. I know more 16 and 17 year olds through engagement in communities mostly through sport but also because I work in a public facing job, who I know are more intelligent and attuned to modern life than the miserable old entrenched twats who engage in politics and local issues presently. We do the yoof down by nature, but we underestimate their nous and foresight. They see their issues and have no voice at the moment.
Then we need capacity to call out failing elected officials beyond an online petition and having to wait for a by election which is usually carved up anyway with the usual candidates.
Any whiff of cronyism, old boys networks, local back scratching groups, should be challenged robustly and capacity enabled to more easily hold a new vote to shift the old guard out.
Most controversially, as their pay is an easy target for haters, MPs should be slashed by about 30% by constituency and their pay increased. This will attract more accomplished people from professions who arent attached to party lines and who arent repaying favour and serving masters.
And lastly, lets respect the civil service and acknowledge they know their area of business rather than demonise them. How can a minister or even Sec of State for an area of responsibility be in charge of Energy one year and then reshuffled the next to run the Dept of Education the next for example? Its a nonsense obviously. The ones who keep those wheels greased are clearly those who work in that area and not the Minister in charge of them. Lets have an accountable public face for each dept who isnt an MP, from the civil service, and then hold them to account, and not have old grey men in grey suits who nobody sees
