I accept it, but I've been thinking about it all day, so I suppose part of me does not quite accept it. Thirty-three seems like not very much these days, for a world class midfielder. It shows, I suppose, that he really did give his all.
And, to be fair, he had a style as a midfielder that included a ferocious turn of pace that would catch opposition defenders out. He'd get the ball rolled or kicked out to him from Ed, it would catch him up just about our side of the halfway line. He always seemed to know if he had space in front of him without even looking, so he wouldn't take a touch on the ball, he'd just use its own momentum and let it roll past him. Then he'd suddenly propel it forward and accelerate viciously. The opposition defenders were backpedalling in panic as our front men, and especially Sergio, found space between them. Then the mercilessly accurate ball released to the foot of Sergio, Raz, Gaby, Erling. He no longer had that capacity this season, and it was painfully visible.
But I don't know, the way he was haring around against Bournemouth the other day, I thought, “Oh, maybe he's still got some left in the tank”.
Pep sees them all week, and was a player himself. So he knew.
I think we, as fans, have massively underestimated the toll on the core players' bodies of playing twice a week, pretty much from September onwards — League Cup + PL, then into CL + PL, then back to League Cup mixed with F.A. Cup mixed with PL, going deep into three, four competitions — at the highest level… for seven solid years.
