United (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

The re-build needs to start with 2 attacking fullbacks, a creative mid-fielder and a winger who knows what he’s doing.

How we miss the Walker of previous seasons and a player of David Silva’s quality.

A new Vincent Kompany type captain would not go amiss either.

I agree with you on the need of quality recruitments. I got annoyed by our slowing of the flow of the play, for example, by Doku, who repeatedly spent almost 10 seconds standing still against a defender, attempting to do one on one, and then passing the ball backward. His posturing is so pointless.

I still can't understand what I watched yesterday.
City bought in January fresh legs and we don't use them.
Rags are shit
It almost seemed like a deal had been done that both teams wanted a draw.

Young legs in midfield and City would have walked that game.

The atmosphere was piss poor City could be heard but apart from a few minutes the rags were silent.

A very very odd game glad I didn't pay 70quid to watch that like the rags did.

I feel cheated by that game
I suspect you weren't alone in feeling 'cheated'...... I couldn't get a ticket, but it made for pretty miserable viewing by stream, and it looked all over a goalless draw from early on to me ...... we were more intent on not losing, than actually winning, and United weren't much better ..... some of their fans are claiming it's the worst and most ineffective City side they've seen for the last 15 years or so, and it was hard to argue with them ..... it just felt strange for a derby match, when we are chasing a Champions League place, and need to be grinding out winning results.

I am puzzled why Nico Gonzalez is suddenly out of the picture but I don't think City were ever capable of going to OT and beating their 5 man defence. Peak City would struggle.
'Peak City' though Marvin, had players such as David Silva, who probed and probed at the United defence, and usually found a way ..... they had the class, patience, and quality to eventually create an opening or two, which someone like Aguero, Sterling or Dzeko would have finished off ..... right now we are not on the same planet as City sides of a few years ago.

So basically Raheem Sterling but without the goals and assists.
Neither Doku or Savinho are near the level of the wide players we used to have in Sane, Sterling and Mahrez. Doku has had 2 seasons now and hes a 1 good game in 10 player - a rough diamond, who looks more like a Spurs player every time I watch him. Ill give Savinho another go around the clock next year but the signs arent promising - that said Id take him above Doku all day, every day as the next decent cross he sends over will be his first.

The switch from the aforementioned players to the current pair is just an example of the managed decline of the squad. Nunes isnt good enough and Im wondering if we sent Stevie Wonder to scout him, hes that poor as a midfielder. Luckily we are converting him to a mediocre full-back - another downgrade on the previous incumbent there before his legs went.

Gonzalez appears to have dropped out of favour as well - Im mystified why he wasnt selected at Bournemouth or yesterday, but here we are. A huge overall is needed and we need to stop buying "prospects" and start adding recognised quality players again. However can we actually attract this level of players if we are trotting about in the Conference League on Thursday nights next season, as the club sleepwalks to the end of this one? I dont fancy us at all at Everton on the 19th, nor vs Villa on the 22nd either so CL qualification looks a big ask for a team with a central midfield more suited to Soccer Aid than the Premier League.

Doku ( who was awful) still managed to get their FB booked within minutes of coming on.

Southampton and Ipswich have both outplayed the rags at the swamp.

At least go down fighting, that has to be the worst derby for lack of passion I have ever witnessed.
Playing against a team, at home, with little attacking ambition and stacking 11 men behind the ball for 85% of the game is not an easy thing to break down at Premier league level. With a 5 man back line the rags were happy to invite us on and try to hit us on the break for the whole game. as soon as we gained possession they dropped off to their defensive third of the pitch and we were unable to break them down. They won't have played that way against Southampton or Ipswich.
At the moment, through ageing players and injury, we are lacking the talent to unlock this tactic.

And his passing worse, time and time again he gives it away whether that’s a cross that finds nobody or a 5 yard misplaced pass.
Unfortunately him and Savinho are absolutely miles away from where we were with Sane, Sterling, Mahrez.

Morning.
Slept on it and as per yesterdays post -yep it was a horrific performance.
No Savio,Doku, Nico or Grealish yet play oap's Gundogan Kovacic and a totally out of sorts Foden.
Bizarre bizarre management from Pep who has pissed me off to some tune this season with some monumenally poor selections. Still love the bloke but he is not immune from taking part of the blame because he picks the team.
Buys Gonzales and soesn't play him. Why????
United were wank but take no solace in that.
Wake up if you think Rodri coming back will change it all. It won't. He will be a lot more prone to injuries in particular muscular injuries after a year out...
Fans were great anyway yesterday.

Don’t question my mentality then.

Pep was sanguine with a point. So am I. It’s better than a defeat. He sees the team training, he knows the issues. He picks what he think is the best team. I trust him.
What part of my post "questioned your mentality"?

Absolutely none of it, You'd notice that if you read properly.

I was questioning your attitude and audacity giving it the "Big I Am", I thought it was Jurgen Klopp posting for a second "Mentality Monster"...

As I said, People have different opinions and look at things differently regarding football, Some posters you'll agree with, Other posters not so much, That's life. It doesn't mean you've a better Mentality than others so you'll need to get off your high horse with that one.

Someone in the Nico thread mentioned that Nico yelled at Pep after being subbed off against Spurs.

I had no idea that had happened and equally no idea if it created an issue between him and Pep, so don’t shoot the messenger!

We played KDB, we know his strengths we know his weaknesses, so if we are going to get the best from him, he needs runners, how old was that midfield 126?. Gundogan for example what was he on the pitch for?, how many goals or assist has he got this season, compared to Grealish who has played about a third of the time, and out of position? G
Gundogan is a passenger and should not start for City again.
O Reilly not a left back but did a good job, because he has the pace and the power, he got a few things wrong, but he has shored up our failing problem, but Pep brought on Lewis and it was shit to the wind again, lewis has his strengths, but it is not defending. So where is McFarlane who is faster and just as strong as O Reilly, but also a left back, where is Mc Farlane. Pep too much loyalty is failing you.

He is the greatest manager of all time but fuck me he is having a shocker this season. Why the fuck he keeps sticking with the old heads I do not know. They can keep the ball yes, but they can't move Pep! Get some energy and movement on the pitch.

First time I’ve ever been to an away game at the swamp. I was very surprised they let us out at the same time. Had to walk shoulder to shoulder with the scum lot

One of them can't keep the ball, Gundogan. He just flicks it anywhere he can to get it away from him or he miscontrols it.

Agreed.

I think we need to play youth, I know Grealish isn't youth but he can certainly cover ground, O'Reilly should be in his natural position of midfield too, It would just be nice to see players with energy and having the legs to get around the pitch, Stick Doku and Savinho in that bracket too.

One thing I don't agree with is that part you've mentioned of "they can keep the ball", We actually can't do that anymore, The amount of times we give up possession these days is quite remarkable, Most of which is from a simple pass. At least when KDB gives it away its from trying something difficult to open the game up.

Agreed. We've never had a great defence. We were just exceptional at possession. This nullified the world class opposition players.

My opinion only but, bullshit. Go look round the league for better wingers, and actually watch them, our wingers do have a problem, playing against 11 defenders every week with only 1 striker, a problem caused by Pep, who has allowed our squad to get slow, every team in the league knows they will get the points if they defend deep and play on the counter.
