US Tariff War

What American manufactured products do I actually buy?

I don't eat McDonalds, but if I did and decided to boycott it, I reckon nearly every ingredient is sourced in the UK, Ireland or Europe
We do our main shop at ASDA, which is Walmart owned. Again, there's nothing we buy that's US produced
If I buy something off Amazon, chances are it was manufactured in the Far East or the UK
And these three companies employ thousands of UK workers

As far as I can see, the only change I can really make is by changing my browser from Chrome
Walmart only own 10% of Asda. It's majority British-owned these days.

Things like Amazon and McDonalds should really be boycotted anyway (I say that as someone who doesn't do it). The thing about them employing lots of British people is a false argument. They employ lots of British people because of the money you spend with them. If you spend that money somewhere else, then the somewhere else will employ lots of British people instead. If everyone who bought stuff on Amazon switched to Argos instead, what do you think would happen to jobs at Argos' distribution centres? They'd explode.

I wonder if the China/US spat is now into meaningless figure territory - the %age add-ons are so high, it makes no difference if they're increased.

Some of the stock market big boys may be unaffected, some will get smacked.
The smaller entities who are just unlisted companies will be ruined.

Apparently govt bonds are getting a sell-off and China have more than anyone else it's not known who is selling them. Normally, this is the safe haven where people go to when stock markets fall, so if they're being sold off, it's a potential mess.
I don't really understand enough as to why hedge funds might be affected, something about placing 'bets' on movement.
Haha China double fucking the US as there were reports of republicans selling stocks and buying bonds ahead of the tariffs

Fast food is a big target, their outlets are on every European high street.
Media too. So many American things can literally be boycotted immediately. If you really want to, cancel your Netflix, your Disney Plus, your Amazon Prime, move your Apple music to Spotify, cancel Microsoft Office, switch to a non-American cloud hosting service, etc.

Obviously anything social is a bit trickier. It's hard to give up something that everyone else is on. In theory, you could swap WhatsApp for Viber or Telegram, but if no-one else is on it, then it's not much use.

There’s another point around this that gets conspicuously missed, namely the work ethic/culture issue which will have unquestionably have been hugely eroded in those rust belt states in the last half century. In that period drug use will have increased enormously, opioid use exponentially, rates of obesity will have gone through the roof amongst large swathes of the population much of which are zombified by social media addiction and the rabbit holes it transports them to daily.

The ethos of the dignity of work has been washed away in the last couple of generations and it’s hard to see how, wage differentials apart, the requisite productivity levels can be attained, even if all the other factors fall into place, which they absolutely won’t.
"Hello, El Salvador? Can we have those people back please?"

As well as all the big tech giants (Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, NVidia), there are multiple finance companies (including JP Morgan Chase, Amex), Astra Zenica and Nestle who have a huge global presence.

Decoupling the UK's economy from the US is nigh on impossible in the short term, hence the saying 'when the US economy sneezes, the world catches a cold'.

If he becomes too tedious for them China needs only ban their exports of rare earths to the USA and he is fucked in like tech and defence sectors - I assume his claims on those in Ukraine were first made with one eye on this happening but he has gone quiet as doubtless his boss Vlad has said hands off shitty arse those are mine.

He’s clearly insane.

China exports container loads of tat to the US. There are shelves and shelves of stuff in Walmart alone imported from China. Tariffs won't just increase the price of Chinese goods. The price of commodities will go up, further pushing up prices of 'homemade' goods, and US manufacturers will almost certainly put their prices up to just below the price of the tariffed Chinese goods, because why wouldn't they?

Tariffs are just plain dumb in today's global markets.

I am not sure what will send the biggest chills down MAGA spines - shelves for of $10 tat now ticketed at $25 OR just row upon row of empty shelves .............

evidence of how mad he is - this impacts his side as well as the other - this just turns off all investment and industrial spend in the US economy until businesses get to know and trust the future
But the stupid MAGA cunts think he's sticking it to all of the dodgy foreigners
