The Masters Golf

I'm with you. Similar when people talk about bands/artists etc, deliberately choosing to like/dislike someone purely because of which football team they support. You can still hate United but have huge admiration and respect for one of their "fans" who's just achieved something remarkable in sport and by all accounts seems to be a fairly humble guy.

That emotion when he made the putt was completely genuine, fair play to him. Honestly thought when it went to a playoff that Rose would be favourite to go on because McIlroy's head must have been a mess. To come back from that and play the hole the way he did - wow.
I love seeing Mick Hucknall succeed. When he does well, the whole of Manchester does well.

Each to there own mate.
As a golf fan, I couldn't give a fuck who he supports, as it makes no difference to me.
It's not like he's playing in a united top.
He's a great golfer and is good to watch, and like it or not, he's now in the grand slam club, a rare thing.
I can respect that regardless.
I think a lot of that when people post such things is bravado and not true. You’ll get some who are like that, like a poster last night who admitted he is just a bitter fucker, but in the main statements like that are for places like this or the pub, and in secret they like what they claim to hate.

He's like David Silva. Amazing moments of brilliance but shit in front of goal on occasion.

Oh I loved it last night!
I love both of them. Two Ryder's Cup heroes for me. EU-ROOPE!

Rory is top when he plays aggressively, he just can't play safe, it doesn't work.
Rosie, so extremely strong in his mind and such a great putter. And matchplay competitor, I feared for Rory in the play-off...

“Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course,
the space between your ears.”

I'm buzzing Rory did it finally. 99% of people would have given up after all the drama he has experienced. Even last night he had enough moments to pack in and resign - look at Aberg, who imploded.

But Rory didn't. He fought back and won it. Top resilience.
I think we'll see more silverware after this relief.

Just finished it.

Never seen emotions like that. I can’t imagine the pressure he felt on that last play off shot, and then it poured out of him.

Scenes.

Seeing a certain crowd get upset by a Mcilroy win makes me believe I backed the right player.
I’m not a golfer but I do like watching the majors every now and then, plus the Ryder Cup of course. I would normally have preferred Rose to win yesterday but once it got to the play off, I was more worried about what a defeat for McIlroy would do to him (in terms of him being the one to throw it away) than to Rose (who probably already realised he’d messed up on Saturday and was lucky to be getting a second chance) and I wouldn’t want that for any decent sportsman which McIlroy seems to be.

Hopefully we’ll see Rose win another major soon to soften the blow.

I thought the crowd were great too, not being too partisan towards the American competitors and wanting to see history made.

Aberg apart from that horrendous cock up on the last couple of holes was solid. Wouldn't surprise me if he won a major very soon. Got to bed late last night but what a rollercoaster.

It had the feel of the old days of Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam, on the BBC with Peter Allis.
twist after twist and drama with going in the water and missed puts from 4ft to win it, to a play-off hole.

Just about the right winner. but Rose played the best last round ever with 10 birdies, the rest just fell away.

Last night was a phenomenal watch, but the other thing it did was make me realise once again how privileged we were to witness one of the most iconic moments ever in the greatest sport on the planet (though I accept it didn't feel like it when we were going through it!)

As Chat GPT will tell you (not 100% accurately!)...

Final Thoughts: Why 93:20 Still Stands Out

While Istanbul was a greater comeback, Leicester was a greater story, and Iniesta’s goal had more global significance...

93:20 remains unique because:

  • It decided the entire league title — in the last kick — after a 44-year wait.
  • The shift in momentum (United fans celebrating one minute, stunned the next) was instant and brutal.
  • It turned a club's identity on its head — from “typical City” to a new football dynasty.
  • It gave us arguably the most iconic piece of commentary in Premier League history.
So yeah, 93:20 is up there with the best — but what makes it so powerful is how compact, immediate, and emotionally violent it was.

Back on topic, though I prefer Rose, imo you'd have to be a heartless sod to begrudge McIIroy that moment. He rode his luck at times but to hold it together in the play-off after everything that had happened made him a deserving winner.

Thought DeChambeau went out of his way to gee the crowd up to try and give it a bit of a Ryder Cup, us versus them, feel presumably hoping it would unsettle Rory. The Augusta ‘patrons’ don’t go in for partisanship particularly against a guy who supports the PGA Tour to the degree Rory does and has made the country his home. DeChambeau on the other hand took the LIV dollar and it was noticeable that he didn’t get anything like the reaction I think he was expecting.
What is it about the last 9 holes of The Masters that produces drama every year in the way none of the other three majors quite match?

I don't mind Bryson, but don't think Rory will be too concerned by this. One went home with the Green Jacket and the other completely imploded.

Baffled by Bryson taking 3 Wood after Rory's start and instead of going for the jugular went on the defensive almost immediately when they were tied for the lead. Should be more concerned about some of his own decisions than being unable to have a chinwag on the way round.

I'm absolutely certain that McIlroy won't give a toss what DeChambeau thinks of him. Why would he? He's just joined a very elite club, one that I'm sure DeChambeau would love to be in. And he (McIlroy) is going home $4.2m richer, and with a lifetime exemption for the Masters. It's a tough gig, innit?
