Part of me thinks it might be 'interesting' going one of the 'lower' European competitions as we'd have a good chance of winning it and it would allow us to play some of the youth players.

Of course, it could hinder our chances of not getting the very best players, but let's be honest we will be back in it the year after anyway!

Playing Thursday kills any notion of a Premier League challenge.

Especially so, travelling to backwaters, just so a few pissheads can enjoy ticking off places they haven't yet visited.

Newcastle are looking very like us circa 2011, the belief that comes from
winning a big final and bagging some silverware has taken them to a new level. If they make some marquee signings in the summer I’d have them as favourites for the PL next year given the lack of a genuinely top class team in the league
Hhhmm - not sure where they're at with PSR/FFP or whatever other bollocks the red shirts make up before the transfer window.
That and I'm expecting clubs around them to be doing plenty of business, us included.
Additionally they're back in Europe so more games, less recovery time more potential for injuries.
So that'd be a no from me - feel free to bookmark though :D

Playing Thursday has fuck all to do with it. We won't challenge if we are not good enough to. Teams that don't qualify for CL this year sixth place or below usually can't improve sufficiently the following season to challenge. For supports he means a lot more Sunday football which for many can be a pain in the arse. I think we will finish 5th this year and 3rd next year.

I may be silly but I reckon if Rodri didnt get injured you guys would be top or chasing Liverpool very closely. Weird how much one player can affect a teams season but I guess if Salah got injured Liverpool maybe wouldnt be running away with it.
Would be a big ask, Rodri is the major injury, but we've not had a consistent back 4 all season because of injuries.

A settled back 4 of Akanji, Dias, Stones and Gvardiol/Ake without Rodri probably would have seen us go fairly close, or certainly see us finish a comfortable 3rd.

If one of the English teams were to win Europa league, foes the 5th spot go to them over the league table?

Chelsea's draw in ECL is quite something. like Polish 4th and then the 3rd of Sweden. what a shambles of a tournament.

either way it takes a bit out of them these games and that much less energy for their fight for top5 places. Palmer seen Foden and Bellingham doing quite well in CL in last 2 years, Saka this year while he is turning up vs Djurgardens...
he needs to move to a CL club haha.

We'll finish above Chelsea and Forest, not sure about Villa.
Bookmakers feel the opposite. Things can change quickly, but Villa is the least likely to get top five and at very long odds, at that(4.8/+380). They have us almost as a lock for it at 1.13. *knock on wood*.

Why the hell are people.worrying about top 5.
I am actually suprememly confident.
Because, firstly, we still have loads of key players out injured:
Ederson, Stones, Aké, Akanji, Rodri, Foden and Haaland… that’s the spine of a title winning quality team all out, and players of that quality being out for most of the season is the main reason we are where we are.

And even since we got over the 1 win in 13 games through the Autumn, our record is still only:
WWWDWLWWLWLWLLWWLDWWDW
P22 W13 D3 L6 F54 A29

It’s erratic and inconsistent, loads of goals scored but loads also conceded, with a non-win percentage of 41%. We’ve only won three games in a row once in that run and one of those games was against a League 2 side.

And we’ve only played really well five times: Ipswich away, Chelsea home, Newcastle home, Bournemouth away and Palace home.

As much as I feel like we can easily finish in the Top5 with performances like those five games^; you have to remember we could very easily also put in a few performances like Paris away, Arsenal away, Madrid home+away, Liverpool home, Forest away, Brighton at home and United away, which have been more frequent than our good performances.

The way I see it…

Forrest will crumble and struggle to finish top 6 let alone top 4

If Newcastle beat Villa tomorrow they’ll get 3rd

Chelsea’s remaining fixtures will see them failt to finish top 5

Which leaves us and Villa for 4th and 5th.
