The Labour Government

I drive a classic Land Rover, also an appreciating asset.

Which brings with it it its own problems when it comes to insurance valuations and security of course.

Modern mainstream plastic shite are designed to be disposable appliances though. Three years on a PCP, hand it back, get the next touch screen washing machine.

Nothing sums this up more than those hateful Tesla things. About as interesting as a dishwasher - and these days my dishwasher is probably worth more than one of them [emoji23]
I have a "dishwasher" (Audi Etron GT) and to be fair its OK , it does eat tyres which is fair enough as I have it as a salary sacrifice car, mainly to save some tax. I do however prefer the petrol S5 which my wife runs, it handles better because its a lot lighter.

I was being sarcastic mate.

I referred to Tesla as soulless washing machines.

I haven’t said anything about Audi at all.
Regardless mate, electric cars really don't feel as enjoyable to drive. If you dont enjoy driving or are the type of person who just says a car is for getting from a to b they are fine, for anyone who actually enjoys driving, yes they are quick in a straight line but they feel heavy and cumbersome on a twisty road.

Yep.

My Defender, made of Industrial Revolution era pig iron and leftover WW2 era aircraft parts (ok not quite but not far off!) is lighter than a new BMW 330E.

EVs are numb to drive because to try and counter the insane weight of them the manufacturers have to introduce a multitude of electronic trickery and traction aids which further remove the driver from the driving experience.

I’ve got a bmw i4 and disagree with this. Put it in sports mode and it’s a joy in any setting.

Nothing is free.

Hence the worry from the teachers unions that the funding is not in place as things stand.

It is free in that parents do not have to stump up the direct cost for the price of a meal. It is an excellent proposal and will benefit children.

People moan this Govt isn’t doing enough for poorer families, in some cases with justification, and then moan when they actually do something.

This isn't true at all, total misinformation.

I don't know about older Defenders but a modern Defender weighs 2.5 tonnes so I'd say that any ICE 4x4 is insanely heavy. There are nutters out there driving near 3 tonne Range Rovers who claim that EV's are ruining the roads because of their weight, it's utter bollocks.

A Tesla Model 3 weighs 1.7 tonnes and for comparison an Audi A3 that is full of petrol also weighs around 1.7 tonnes. At worse a Tesla Model Y EV is absolutely massive and yet only weighs 2 tonnes. That weight is better used versus an ICE 4x4 because it's all utilised in the body to carry things and people instead of carrying petrol.

Most EV's locate their batteries low and central so their centre of gravity is very low to the ground. That means that they're far more stable and maybe even impossible to roll over. And by the way, depending on the configuration a full EV battery pack can weigh the same or less than a car engine which needs a persons weight of petrol to run it...

Sorry, not having it! :)

That definitely wasn't fully funded.

It currently is estimated to provide over 381,000 breakfasts a day in 12% of schools versus this new breakfast club of being in around 4% of schools. It was setup to run at 75% funded. The new breakfast club will fund 60pence per pupil (more in deprived areas I believe) which the IFS have stated will only cover the food element not the staffing so schools will be running at a loss under the new scheme - around 40% loss.

Folk are making out this is some sort of break through policy and wants to go on an achievements list whereas there are existing programmes out there that are better funded, better targeted and working.

Thats not to say it’s a bad idea it’s just not novel or well thought through.

I have a former work colleague who, thanks to an inheritance, bought a Defender run out model and got it registered on a 17 plate. He uses it and has a full Land Rover dealership history with it and i can confirm every time it goes in for a service or a warranty repair they offer to buy it off him for what he paid. He says having seen what they have them on sale for on the forecourt, when they get them in, he says their offer factors in a healthy profit on re-sale. Could be argued its not an appreciating asset but its certainly not depreciating any time soon.

ps

its not cheap to look after but he bloody loves it

And continued under the current lot.

And that’s good. When my now 21 yo was at primary she went to a breakfast club for £2 a day - that was under the last Labour government - it was fantastic. Personally (for the free element) I’d rather see them focus on areas with greater poverty than a blanket policy but accept poverty exists everywhere so it’s not that simple. Perhaps a voluntary contribution from parents who are happy to afford it will help the school coffers a bit.
