I agree in general. But the point about free prescriptions was that it can generate an entitlement mindset. £200,000,000 is not to be sniffed at and if even half of that is recouped then that's a good thing. It may also change the mindset of future generations. It may be small fry but worth doing.

As for the major conglomerates, you're spot on but trying to close loopholes is very difficult. I seem to remember that the G20 summit they had in Cornwall a few years ago apparently had some agreement this would be addressed. Nothing has changed as far I know.

the way all parties seem to be doing it is tarring all that are getting free prescriptions as scroungers. making the vulnerable targets. making a large part of their lives having to justify their rightful benefits, not just once but over and over again.
it is a large part because its not just prescriptions its all benefits they are being asked to justify.

for an example my father had early onset parkinsons
this is a degenerative disease, it only gets worse.
still had yearly assesments regarding 6 different benefits from the age of 55 to 65. the pressure he felt every couple of months was difficult to watch.
each assessment was carried out as if he was falsley claiming, that he was already guilty of fraud and each time he had to prove his innocence . it was absolutely disgusting.

it is small fry and is absolutely not worth doing

Just to be clear, the issue of free prescriptions in Wales was used by a future Reform voter as an example of the only good thing Labour have done there in 25 years. I pointed out, using evidence, that it can also drive an entitlement culture because it is free. It can also drive behaviours when a benefit is claimed based on what medication is taken. In the case of my MiL neighbour, it was the prescribing of a heavy duty painkiller for a "back issue" that no longer required anything more than an occasional paracetamol-his words, that was a requirement to claim at least one of the benefits he was claiming.

I'm sorry about your father and the way he was treated by the system.

If the argument ref free prescriptions driving an entitlement culture should extend to free education as a comparison. I Scotland Uni is free for Scottish people in England we pay fees yet there is double %age take up of a Uni education in fee paying England than there is in free Scotland. If the case held water surely near 100% Scottish people would be at University because they are entitled to because its free?
