Remembering Arthur Mann

Anyone remember Arthur from his days at City? This popped through my door this morning from Boston United - The Pilgrims: due to be inducted into their hall of fame.

I remember Arthur at City.

It was easy for him to stand out, as I had (and still have) cousins called Mann.

I remember signing him and thinking "that's a good signing" despite the fact that I knew sweet FA about him. Much like the transfer thread now. £63,000 I think.

Sorry, just landed. I remember him as a flying full back, rated him highly. The only problem with Arthur was, he couldn't fly. He had a phobia of flying. There was a clip of him on local TV staggering across the tarmac heading to the aircraft in fear. Pretty much put paid to his European Cup competition matches abroad. He was killed in a Birmingham factory when a fork lift truck he was driving toppled on top of him iirc.

@ around 15.30 Mann to Bowyer to Bell.

Some good players in this game on both sides.
A good result away at the Bridge.

I remember standing on the Kippax watching him marauding up and down the left wing, not sure who against but it was certainly a 10/10 performance.

He worked in a factory driving a forklift truck in Birmingham after playing, but was unfortunately killed in an industrial accident , he was unlicensed and his family were refused compensation by his employer. This resulted in a landmark case where not only did his family get paid out , it then became illegal to drive a forklift unlicensed. He was citys record signing for a while when he came to Maine road from hearts .

Broke our record of English players only when we won the title in 1968. Always proud we won the title with an entirely English team. Arthur Mann of course was a Scot and a bloody good full back, used to joke we played with ten and half men being Arthur Mann short.
Ha ha yes we used to call him Halfa Mann !

Signed from the mighty Heart Of Midlothian.
Someone once posted on here he had one of the best debut games ever against the rags.
Not sure if true.

No quite true as Bobby Kennedy played several matches in the 1967-68 season, and subsequently was awarded a medal fifty years late.

My memories of Arthur Mann were as a squad player. He started 40 matches for City over three years. The arrival of fellow Scot Willie Donachie may have been key here.

We had just signed him when I attended my first game. Tony Book was injured and Glyn Pardoe played right back. A City record fee of £65 000 from Hearts and did indeed contribute to winning a couple of trophies in 1970 but didn't play as much as he probably deserved. Always liked him as a player and very sad the way he died.

Imagine a top tier player nowadays having to work in a warehouse/factory after retiring..crazy! Even the worst of the worst are set up for a life of luxury. RIP Arthur.
