That's true but his overall game is no longer good enough. The moments are increasingly rare and tend to come in games against weaker opponents where he has time and space on the ball. I am hoping we qualify for the Champions League next season. He simply cannot play at that level. I saw that that this season, let alone next when he will be 34.

If City want to challenge for the title next season and the Champions League, we need to replace KDB in the squad.

Is there an argument to be made that you could say that about a lot of our squad this season?

Bernardo was also no where near his past level until the last month or two.

Pep obviously still sees him as a must pick when fit but the board only have one thing on their minds. £££££
I think it's more to do with planning for next season. He recently said he wants the best for Kevin, and that hints at us going big next season in that area so he won't be guaranteed to start (unlike every other season he's been here). At this age he wants to play, he still thinks he can play but we (the club) don't think he will be able to play enough games at the level we need to justify his wages. Personally i feel like we have made so much money that we owe him another season to prove he can hack it, around the new signings. But the accountants obviously look only at numbers.

I suspect he will also be leaving when his contract is up (if not before). The same with Gundogan, Kovacic, Stones, Ake, Walker etc.

Apparently Liverpool have offered him a contract. I hope he doesn't go there.

KDB was in the bus bottled by Liverpool fans. I doubt he has forgotten that or any of the abuse he has recieved of them or the treatment of Raheem Sterling.

"During an international break in 2023, De Bruyne was quizzed about his love for Liverpool in a video posted by Football Escapes. The City star reaffirmed his early affection for the Reds, stating: "When I was young? Liverpool."

When pushed to answer whether he would sign for Liverpool in the future, he quickly dismissed any notion of this ever happening."

I'm coming round more and more to the idea that this season was a blip, a coming together of almost every possible worst scenario, and we still come out of it smelling pretty fresh.

Maybe the panic was an overreaction. Maybe we're not in need of the overhaul we all demanded in January. A 34 year old Kev is still a player who can do things that others can't, and no way he has the toxic attitude around him that Ronaldo had at United. Far from it, he'd be a inspiration plus I'd expect he'd accept a bench role too.

If we brought in Wirtz, resigned Kev and brought in at least one full back I'd be very optimistic about our chances for next season. Let's not underestimate what we are already, and adding a returning Rodri and Bobb to that is an exciting prospect.
I think we have had incredibly bad luck with injuries in the last couple of years, and maybe longer. We have had fuck all off referees and VAR for sure. I do however disagree re: January. We were creaking, working with 15 players or less. We had three games a week every week and were rapidly losing all confidence. January signings had to be made. That said hardly any of them have had a run in the side?

Yes, but like @PragueBlue said, the others are all under contract and can't be "forced" to leave. We can't possibly go into another season with ALL of KDB, Silva, Gundogan, Kovacic taking up midfield spots. The rebuild has to start at some point and it may as well start when their contracts expire.

Well - he’s got 4 games (one a cup final) to demonstrate he’s back to his best & is indispensable.

If he does, then it’s up to the club to act.
If he doesn’t then sadly, it’s goodbye to a legend.

Totally agree.

Just making the point that I think the totally ‘finished at this level’ lot are going a bit over the top.

I think he could easily do another year as a player at another top team even if it meant not starting every week.

He could play the best 4 games of his career and it won't make a blind bit of difference. He's gone, get used to it.

Where was the magic against the big teams this season?

I'd say his last truly magical performance was against Newcastle away 16 months ago. He was excellent vs. Palace (a bottom half team) recently and that's it, unless we include games vs rubbish teams.
One of his worst game this season was against Liverpool , dont think Slott was impressed

Agreed. And if two of the other players I mentioned were due to leave this season, I'm convinced this thread wouldn't exist as he'd have been offered another year. But we are where we are, unfortunately.

We have an aging midfield with KdB, Kovacic, Gundogan and Bernardo and this has been one of the reasons for our struggles this season. Each of them is going to need replacing over the next year or so. Unless we can find buyers for them, they'll just have to leave when their contracts expire. It just so happens that KdB's is the first to expire.

I certainly hope that we don't offer him another year (unless 2 or 3 of the above mentioned are leaving). We need a complete rebuild of midfield and that can't happen while we still have all of these older players on our books. Otherwise we are in for another similar season.
In order I would have got rid of the following players this summer.

1) Kova
2) KDB
3) Gundo
4) Bernardo

I just don’t think Kova is good enough.

Kev’s legs have gone and we need to get rid.

I’d keep Gundo as coach

Bernardo has been run into the ground this season. I think he had a role to play in the middle of the pitch. I would definitely keep him for next season but probably wouldn’t renew his contract next season. There’s too many miles on his clock.

I actually think Kovacic probably has the most still to offer, followed by Bernardo, KdB and Gundogan. Unless any want out though (and we can find buyers), I think it's likely only KdB out of the 4 will leave. I wouldn't be renewing contracts for any of them though. Same with Ake and Stones (and obviously Walker and Phillips).

We probably have 8-10 players that we need to move on over the next 12 months or so.

I think the club would be making a mistake letting him go to a rival. He could still have 2-3 more years at the very top.

I don’t believe he has 2 or 3 years left at the top. I really wish he could have and if he did I’d love it to be in the sky blue of City. I’d like him to stay and do what he can as often as he can but I don’t think this is the best of Kev, that’s gone unfortunately
