The Labour Government

I wouldn't get excited. Given the speed that they've done this deal this will probably be an optics trade deal rather than a tangible one given the president and PM both could use a 'visible' win on their economies.

It'll be a reciprocal reduction on a few things which are probably just going back to how they were 3 months ago so nobody is going to notice anything.

The real tangible things that would really help us are subject to reverse demands from the US such as big pharma and food but they're likely to be off the table. There's a good reason why these things take years to negotiate.
It's not a visible win if the Tories and Reform and their media pick on a bit of clickbait for racists.

And that's always going to happen. Even if Labour negotiated a deal where they gave up the NHS and gave us chlorinated chicken those two parties would jump on it even though they'd do the exact same thing.

Are optics really important to Labour when it comes to Reform voters anyway? Starmer is never going to win an election appeasing Reform. His true problem is the support he is losing on the left because he is no Blair.

This trade deal sells the NHS to the US and the king has allowed Trump to have a go on Kate when he comes over for the state visit.

On a serious note I doubt not much will have changed from the previous ones. Just tariffs lowered and Trump allowed to sell it a bigly Victory.

100% correct. Starmer is actively giving votes away... he might not realsie it, but it is what Labour are doing which is turning voters away.

Strage to think har line left wingers might be able to be swayed to the right, never mind the hard right. Maybe loads of protest votes?

They are being judged daily like every other govt has been both fairly and unfairly on here since the inception of the cellar/off topic/politics sub forum.

They've only just got in/it's only been a few months/come on its only been a year/it may take at least two terms. Can kicking never afforded before to anyone, tis a bit hopeful and will not happen.
Everyone gets it on here without much balance, its a sad fight to protect one's own side the vast majority of the time. The need to find something, anything to sell their team( everyone loves the bombardment of X and biased newspaper articles, the fighting for something they fought against if it was done by the last lot)

Anyone is free to not get involved and pop back in a few years, one can even grandstand about it to try and impart sense on the rest of us(don't keep coming back though it makes one seem a tad desperate for attention)

The main problem with side taking in politics rather than say football is you cannot ever proclaim who won and get agreement. The powers that be and the electorate conspired against your side plotting in the shadows you see or they are all just more stupid than the enlightened ones. Everything becomes black and white.

Basically hypocrisy, deceit and spin is rife. We hate career politicians for those qualities which is the biggest hypocrisy of all.

Anyhow Labour are in charge so it is as it always has been and they will be the main target(reform being the get out card for this right wing version of Labour)

Walking away from it all is a valid and very logical decision tbh if someone can't see it for what it is, a game that never ends.

I wasn’t talking about this forum, I was talking more generally. I don’t think they are being judged like previous governments were at all, the landscape of social media has changed so much (and some of the legacy media as a consequence) in just a few years and so have voters habits.

Nice to see the usual crowd bad mouthing a US/UK trade deal when it has yet to be confirmed and if it is confirmed not details are known unless of course it was negotiated on Signal and one of them has accidentally been included in the group chat?

I wonder do they know the identity of the next Pope? Could do with getting a bet on.

Helped the junior doctors, train drivers, increased min wage, reformed workers rights bills, renters reform bill and a lot of other good stuff, won’t hear it though.
Junior doctors when qualified on £100k+ per year, train drivers on £70+ per year, my heart bleeds. How about the pensioners on £300 PW who've had their fuel allowance taken. Give your head a wobble.

The same doctors that were leaving the country to get better pay elsewhere, the same drivers that had grounded our transport systems to a halt which was costing the economy billions. Also if you had any clue it wasn’t just about pay, it was holiday, sickness, conditions + pensions that were being ripped from their contracts. Give your head a wobble.

I'm guessing you're an Islington labour luvvie that can't remember when the labour party represented the working class.

I really wouldn't bother wasting your time. He is so dyed in the wool he just cannot see beyond Starmer. Whatever Starmer says goes. If Starmer were to tell us today is Sunday BH85 would swear blind and argue on here that it was. Like I say some people just cannot have a conversation about opinion and insist their thoughts are the correct and only thoughts that matter. It's shame really, healthy debate never hurt anyone.

Think anything might be positive that Labour do = Starmer sycophant.

Labour announce anything = It’s obviously gonna be shit as they hate this country.

What a thread.

You want 'healthy debate' yet come out with this shit attacking posters ??

Interest rates dropping once again.
It’s all so awful under Labour.
There was a fantastic caller on LBC this morning bemoaning labour are playing old political games whilst reform and the RW media are playing the new game using memes and social media to get their points across to non political people who accept these organisations "facts" as gospel.

You are sticking to facts that LP have achieved in less than a year with regards to migration and other issues but they are only promoting them.via their political legacy media media platforms.

They need a 13 year old who knows how to use tik tok to prevent them going the way of Biden and the Dems in 4 years time.

Losing because the RW bullshit machine is cutting through where they aren't by using 30 second videos spreading hate, fear, ignorance and, in some cases ideology of fascist leaders.

The problem is that when you negotiate it should be two way, with both parties strengthening their position. That should have meant both the doctors and train drivers having significant contractual changes which in the case of doctors to tie them into the NHS for a longer period after graduation and training. As regards the train drivers there should have been other significant concessions around working practices.

Instead it does look like an appeasement rather than a negotiation, which leaves the government open to more negotiation at gunpoint in the future by the unions.

As regards your point re interest rates the government does not set interest rates its purely down to the BoE and has been since 1997. For the government to intervene there is legislation that allows it but it would require an extreme situation and it would be national news if they used it.

The reduction that we have just seen is due to fears of the uncertainty within the economy. The idea being it should start to stimulate investment which is slowing down.
