What if Brighton didn’t have to sell? Where would they be now probably going for champions league places.
Liverpool do data signings and they’ve just won the league. Data signings doesn’t just mean young players. It means. Players within the data that would fit the team. Instead of star names you recruit players that fit the specific data for the team.
No matter what league or team.
We should be using data to help with recruiting players who fit our playing style but we shouldn’t be following the Brighton approach. We don’t need to sign a high number of young players who need developing to reach our standard. We’re not Sporting Lisbon, we’re a successful team playing in a top league with one of the highest wage bills in world football.
We should be looking to establish ourselves as the Bayern, Real/Barca of our league whilst we’re in a position of strength with Pep. That doesn’t mean we have to go and spend a fortune on every player but give me a couple of Marmoush level players this summer over 4-6 Brighton level signings any day.
If this lad improves our first 11 then I’m all for it but we should be aiming for a Walker level (or as close to) replacement. I was replying to your post re data signings and mentioning Brighton. We should not be copying their model. This summer should be about replacing KDB, Ederson and Walker with three players who can make an immediate impact now with at least the potential to become world class.
Our best three signings since Dias have been Haaland, Gvardiol and Marmoush. I don’t think it’s a coincidence all three were pretty much guaranteed to be a success. Savinho is a brilliant young player but we’ve all seen this season it’ll take him a few years of development to find that end product. I don’t want a squad of development players, it isn’t being greedy or arrogant, we’ve been above that for 13 years and don’t think we should be lowering standards.
Our years of dominance were built around signings such as Yaya, Silva, Fernandinho and Aguero amongst others who all helped us get where we are. We replaced them over a number of years with the likes of Sterling, KDB, Gundogan, Mahrez, Bernardo, Laporte, Ederson, Walker and Sane. All of these players were highly sought after players who would have ended up at top champions league clubs whether we signed them or not, many were already successful. We have a great academy which can supplement the squad instead of cashing them all in for a profit.
Time will tell I suppose.
