40 years ago today

A great day. Was sat in a seat right next to the tunnel, which was a great vantage point, especially after the full time whistle had gone.

The three goals that were scored in quick succession in the second half was the definite highlight.

First mass pitch invasion I can remember, Luton being limited to a couple of hundred of blues tops I’d say.

I wonder what the actual attendance was that day. Definitely over 50k, but less than 60k I reckon. It wasn’t just in the Kippax that it was overcrowded. People were sitting on the steps in the Platt Lane too.

Thanks for showing the video, brought back some great memories of a time when you really didn't know what would happen at Maine Road.
Remember getting in the Charlton Athletic pen (as a Welshman, my accent helped) at the top left hand area of the Kippax - as the queues were massive for the rest of the Kippax.
A couple of queries I can't remember the answers of :-

* Why did City sell Paul Simpson - he was a youth player who was brilliant for City.
* Why was the open area between the Kippax and the Platt Lane so empty at kick off, as it was rammed later ?
* Did anyone else get in the Charlton pen - as that filled up as well.

A great occasion, but sadly scarred by the Bradford fire disaster, which is often overlooked and forgotten...
Puzzling why we sold simmo. He had a great end to that season. Did he fade the season after? He set , i think, 9 of the 10 goals up v huddersfield

the corner of the kippax was the segregated bit. As said above, they opened it up to ease the amount in the kippax.

I reckon close to 60k mate. Your feet barley touched the floor in the kippax.

What a day so memorable perfect weather too

Our mob was in the seats between Main Stand and North Stand

If so, Swales would have skimmed enough off to get a conservatory built, on top of the kitchen extension that 55k would have paid for.
I believe swales had a turnstyle for himself and he pocketed the proceeds.

But i imagine the turnstyle operators were the ones who made a few quid that day

It’s been said loadsa times, but maine road that day was rammed beyond belief, I was in a scarely packed kippax, you couldn’t move & the rest of the ground seemed the same apart from the sparse platt lane without charlton fans

The Bradford fire created a hero that day. Dr David Sharpe led the team treating the victims. The demand was so great that he had to wing it, inventing new techniques on the fly. He realised afterwards that knowledge of burns was lacking and so founded a new research body which developed ways to speed up recovery by reducing scarring and pain. These are used all round the world now benefitting thousands who have suffered major burns, He was awarded the OBE for his efforts.
Professor Sharpe, as he became, operated on me for a cancerous growth inside my lip. I looked like Cliff Pilchard afterwards with a strange tic in the corner of my mouth. His plastic surgery on me meant I returned to normal very quickly. The much loved Sharpe died a couple of years ago much missed by his colleagues, his patients and, of course, his loved ones. Google him.

They didn’t have the platt lane. It was rammed with city. All they had was the top corner of the kippax

I think you need to re-watch the video to refresh your memory.
