Are there any professional welders here ? It is a great trade, I’m too old to go there for a living but bought a nice welder and all the gear, really enjoying making some arty stuff with a new medium. Been a carpenter for 35 years and enjoying a different material to work with

I got a temporary job once at a steel fabrication co. I was a full time student at the time..,They taught me how to weld, electric arc and oxy acetyline.
It's piss easy after some practice.
Boring job full time though.

I know a guy that works the rigs, welding underwater. He's on mega money but he's risking his life.(his dad was my fishing buddy, rip)
I can barely solder two wires together.

Most trades can be that way, still a good way for a young person to travel, work and bank a lot of money. I know some old guys here( most dead now) who worked in Russia on oil lines. Like you say, not very romantic but killer money

Welding is something I've wanted to have a go at for a while. Wouldn't want to do it for living but it looks like a really interesting skill.

Sadly I don't have the room or need for all the gear but I'd love the opportunity to have a go for a day.

I am huge admirer of skilful welders and artists that use metal fabrication in their work.

A decent aluminium weld is a thing of beauty. I've had a few swing arms modified and they were a work of art, perfect uniform runs.
I have a couple of early 80s motorbikes, and the frames are clearly welded by hand, absolutely gorgeous to a geek like me
It is. I'm quite into my bikes (of the pedal kind). I used to have an aluminium Bianchi - not a particularly expensive model by their pricy standards but the welding on the frame was so obviously done by someone who knew and cared about their craft.

It's the kind of thing that makes you really respect a manufacturer and the people they employ.

will always be needed, but on a diminishing scale as mass production has been robotised. One-offs and hobby work bit like blacksmithing. Very satisfying when the slag comes off in one piece,

Whip me up a front and rear bumper for a 2024 CFmoto CF600 touring please.
A set of skid plates wouldn’t go amiss either.
How are you finding the bike? What's the build quality like? I've heard mixed reviews on the Chinese stuff.
I'm considering a tourer but I ain't paying 20k for a BMW.

When I was about seven years old, I found a pair of welders goggles on the way home from school, so put them on
I was walking through the park and this guy jumped out from behind a bush and asked me if I knew what masturbation was?
I said "no"
He then asked, "Do you know what anal sex is?"
Again, I said "no"
He asked "do you know what a blow job is"
I said "I'm not a real welder"

Loving it so far. I had a fan fuse blow on me the other day after going through some deep water but that's about it.
Good stuff. I guess any bike would have blown the fuse there, that's what they're for, no big deal.
They do seem outstanding value for money.
Keep safe bud.

I am very down at the moment but that has really made me laugh. Fuck knows why, perhaps I like stupid jokes but anyway, thanks for cheering me up.

For about 2 minutes.

It was a welding screen when I heard this one 40 years ago :-)

Especially if you were using Unitrode you’d made it if the slag peeled its self off
